Difference between insolation and solar radiation

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Insolation specifically refers to the amount of solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface, measured in watts per square meter. It varies based on factors such as time of day, season, and location, and is influenced by the Earth's atmosphere. In contrast, solar radiation encompasses the entire spectrum of electromagnetic energy emitted by the sun, including visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet radiation. While both terms relate to solar energy, insolation focuses on what reaches the surface, whereas solar radiation refers to the total energy emitted by the sun.

At first I thought you had misspelled "insulation"!

I googled on "insolation" and got a website that defined "insolation" as the "intensity of solar radiation" perhaps that "intensity" is the difference you are looking for, perhaps there is no difference.

Insolation and solar radiation are both terms used to describe the amount of energy that reaches the Earth from the sun. However, there is a slight difference between the two.

Insolation refers specifically to the amount of solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface. It is measured in watts per square meter and can vary depending on factors such as time of day, season, and location. Insolation is affected by the Earth's atmosphere, which can reflect, absorb, or scatter some of the incoming solar radiation.

On the other hand, solar radiation is a broader term that refers to the entire spectrum of electromagnetic energy emitted by the sun. This includes not only the visible light that we can see, but also infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Solar radiation is measured in watts per square meter as well, but it refers to the total amount of energy that is radiated from the sun and does not necessarily take into account how much of that energy reaches the Earth's surface.

In summary, insolation is a more specific term that describes the amount of solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface, while solar radiation is a broader term that encompasses all forms of energy emitted by the sun.
