i am working on design of a machine which requires use of gear. I need to transmit horizontal rotational motion to vertical rotary motion. my question is their a means of getting the specific type and specification of gear am to use without calculating? if am to calculate how do i start and what parameters am i to use for my calculation starting from my shaft or pulley.
thank you in anticipation of a solution to my problem

The most common type used for this is a bevel gear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bevel_gear) set.
Many companies have information on their websites for selecting gears, based on loads, speeds, conditions, etc.
Google "bevel gear selection (http://www.google.com/search?q=bevel+gear+selection)" returns a lot of options.

Bevel gears are the best options for transmission in such cases where shafts are either perpendicular or inclined at an angle.
