Watched any good movies lately, that you would definitely recommend ?
I haven't watched any movies in a while now, mostly because I haven't heard of there being that many good ones. I did watch one movie (dvd) this weekend - L'auberge Espagnole (2002) - I quite enjoyed it. :approve:
Time to catch up on all the good movies that I've been missing...suggestions, anyone ?
I just watched 12 Monkeys which came out in 1995. It's a story about the vicious cycle of time. I am sure that you, Gokul, as sci-fi-trivia-master, should have seen the movie already. If not, I highly recommend it.
This is probably stating the obvious as well but I watched the remastered version of 2001- A Space Odyssey a while ago and enjoyed it immensely, totally fascinating and mind-boggling for me.

I loved 'Kill Bill' 1 and 2... but you need to be a bit of a Tarantino fan........
"The Last Samurai" was a fantastic film too - nothing like I expected, very informative, and well worth watching.

Did anyone here ever see Carpenter's Cult Classic "Dark Star"? I love that film - I laugh so much every time I see it!
The lift scene cracks me up..... and as for the Alien! A big plastic blow up ball!!!!

I recently saw a SciFi on TV called The Cube that surprised me a bit. Not only was it better than I expected, it actually had a plot, not just special effects, which is unusual these days for SciFi.
Pulp Fiction.
Clockwork Orange.
Reservoir Dogs.
Team America: World.....
All incredible movies. Practically perfect in every aspect.

It depends on your approach to films. I tend to avoid industry films and entertainment films. I'm not interested in cinema as a business or as a rollercoaster ride; I'm interested in cinema as an art form (even though I have serious reservations about the worth of art (an old PF thread)). I prefer films made by a single artist or a tightly knit group of artists. I would use the term "independent film", but that term has been abused in recent years.
I tend to agree a lot with the film critic, Ray Carney. I wouldn't say I agree with him about everything -- no way -- but I agree with him more than any other film critic. Read about some of his opinions on cinema here:
http://people.bu.edu/rcarney/independentfilm/
I think before you see the latest films, you need to catch up with what you have surely missed -- and that would include some very old films. If you're really keen, I would suggest working through the Criterion Collection:
http://www.criterionco.com/asp/browse.asp
Well-known directors I recommend include:
Andrei Tarkovsky
Ingmar Bergman
Robert Bresson
Yasujiro Ozu
Akira Kurosawa
John Cassavetes
Carl Dreyer
Mike Leigh
A couple of lists of mostly fine directors:
http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/directors/index.html
http://www.filmref.com/directors/directors.html
Then there's various genres like silent films (chaplin, griffith, murnau), documentaries, and stop-frame animation (svankmajer, brothers quay).
Maybe I being cynical, but I think I may have just wasted my time with this post. The mainstream view on films is so incredibly entrenched. It's a far different story for music. Go figure.

Kafka with Jeremy Irons
I watched the remastered version of 2001- A Space Odyssey
I've seen the english version recently. It was a contrast for me to hear the soft tone of voice of HAL in this version, I was used to the raucous tone that has in the spanish version. I certainly missed that the protagonist didn't say "It's full of stars!" when he felt right into the monolite

Casablanca is probabally the best movie ever. Every single scene means something, no filler, just a great movie.
I just watched 12 Monkeys which came out in 1995. It's a story about the vicious cycle of time. I am sure that you, Gokul, as sci-fi-trivia-master, should have seen the movie already. If not, I highly recommend it.
I second the sentiment that you sh\ould see 12 monkeys, great movie in general. My avatar is actually a shot of Brad Pitt from that movie.
Fight Club is another really great Brad Pitt movie.
I also saw Man on Fire recently, and I enjoyed it a lot.
That was great.
I just saw A Few Good Men again yesterday. Man, that is a good movie. Got to love Tom Cruise.
It's been quite a while since I last went to Movie Gallery. Plan on taking a little trip there next week, however.
Did anyone here ever see Carpenter's Cult Classic "Dark Star"? I love that film - I laugh so much every time I see it!
The lift scene cracks me up..... and as for the Alien! A big plastic blow up ball!!!!
"Dark Star" is one of my favorite movies, funny like hell! I have that movie on tape and once in a while watch it. I also like Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" amazing movie.
I also like Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" amazing movie.
Great movie. Have you seen the "Musashi" trilogy?
I've seen Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon". I also have Kurosawa's "Ran", "Seven Samurai" and "Yojimbo" - all of them highly recommended by movie critics - but I have not had the time to watch them.
Gokul, even if you don't like Anime, I highly recommend "Grave of the Fireflies". It's a touching story set in WWII about a little girl and her brother who lose their parents to the war. I don't usually like anime, but this movie definitely struck a chord with me.
I didn't know there was a "Musashi" trilogy but I have heard of and played a Playstation game of a similar title. It was a great RPG game.
I didn't know there was a "Musashi" trilogy but I have heard of and played a Playstation game of a similar title. It was a great RPG game.
A Playstation game with the same title? I've never heard of it. Anyway, it's just a movie based on the book of the same title by Eiji Yoshikawa, which is a great novel, by the way. However, it's quite expensive, $30 for each DVD on Amazon. Ouch!! :surprised
It's the first time since in a long time I'm going through Woody Allen movies, and I'm really enjoying them! First Take the Money and Run, which was really funny  And then there was especially one scene in Everything you wanted to know about Sex but where afraid to ask, where that guy comes and says he's a love in a sheep, and there's this awkward silence. Then I just cracked up
Hannah and her Sisters were cute too.

I am not really into anime...but I'll give it a shot. I'm not sure though, that I'll find 'Grave of the Fireflies' at Blockbuster.

I saw Man on Fire the other day. It was awesome.
Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander is fantastic, as is Andrei Tarkovskij's Andrei Rublyov—IMHO two of the finest films ever.
For a more recent (and shorter and less depressing  ) film, I recommend The Triplets of Belleville.
Since people are recommending Japanese directors, I'll mention Juzo Itami (Tampopo, A Taxing Woman, Minbo).
An obscure but fun movie is the Australian comedy Malcolm about a geeky inventor and some bank robbers who carry out a heist using (among other things) a wandering pack of remote controlled ashtrays. The movie also features a Volkswagen beetle that splits in half down the center and drives off as two separate vehicles...

I saw that recently too!!! pretty crazy stuff wasnt it?
My two cents... The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy
Or how about 13th Warrior?
"Messenger" about Joan D'arc and 100 year war, lots of blood and gore but life in medieval times was like that.
New films I've seen recently are "Saw" and "Collateral". "Saw" was very twisted, but ok and "Collateral" was pretty good. I also recently bought "Taking Lives" on DVD and that was great IMO.

Wow, I must be in the wrong forum. Cause I would never want to hang out with a bunch of people who watched movies like these.
Are you sure we are talking about real movies? I think that not only do I not watch the channels that show these movies, but I erase the channel every time I reprogram my TV.
Give me a South Park marathon, the Matrix, Blazing Saddles and Nova and I'm a happy camper.

Bergman's latest film, "Serenade" (it's from 2002-2003) is also a nice little piece from an old master.
"Tombstone of fire flies": quite a sad movie. i don't think Gokul will be able to find this in your place.
"Tears of the sun( bruce willis) : quite a good movie also. it answers the question "why does somebody risk his life to safe others when he knows that he is going to die ?".

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a pretty cool movie about memory erasure. Jim Carrey doesn't overdo his acting in this movie at all. Charlie Kaufman, the same guy who wrote Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, wrote the screenplay for this movie, so you can expect to find that the movie departs from quite a few Hollywood conventions.

I second Waking Life, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Pi. All must sees IMO. Another absolute must see is Mullholland Drive. You'll need to watch it several times to start to 'get' it, but it'll be worth it. I was more or less clueless the first time I watched it, but now I think it's one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen.
I'd also recommend Before Sunset if you haven't seen it (tho you'd probably want to see Before Sunrise first, if you haven't).
I just got around to seeing 'Almost Famous'. That's a pretty good movie. Very entertaining.

You call those old ones? A couple of old ones I like to call classic are Casablanca and West Side Story.
On a side note, I just saw Shrek 2 and it was totally better than the first.
Just watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I'm going into Westerns now. Next up: For A Few Dollars More.
Kill Bill #1 is an excellent movie, first I hated it but now I think that movie is great!

That was based off of Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai starring Toshiro Mifune. Highly recommended!
The Seven Samurai is one of the most overrated films of all time.
It claims to be the greatest action movie ever, and yeah the action in it is pretty good........ but the whole other 2 and a half hours of crap are the WORST ever!!
If you want to watch this movie, just watch the las half hour or so.
My suggestions for movies are as follows: Go and see Peter Jackson's (directed The Lord Of The Rings) first three movies........They are:
Bad Taste , (aliens try to take over New Zealand!!!!)
Meet The Feebles , (the muppets meet sex, drugs and rocknroll)
Braindead , (monkey bite turns small town into zombies)
HILARIOUS!! (you just have to remember that he was chosen to direct the Rings trilogy, hilarious!!!)

Without the beginning of the movie, it would have no substance. If you were to watch the last thirty minutes, instead of enjoying the movie, you'd be wondering what the hell is going on.
OK, I'll summarise it in a couple of lines, that way anybody who watches it will know whats going on:
A small village of peasants is threatened by a group of bandits.
The peasants then need to find somebody to protect the village for when the bandits return.
They search and search and search (and finally find seven samurai), and convince them to protect their village, even though they can't pay them anything.
They get back to the village and the bandits come.
That's 2.5 hrs of movie for you.
......................................
I admit I was expecting a completely different movie than what I saw. Therefore I have a somewhat tainted view. I agree that it is a good movie, but still think that it is completely overrated.
P.S. as has been mentioned in earlier threads, anything from Kubrick is good.

The Shining would be an exception; I fall asleep every time I try to watch it.
Dr. Strangelove was definitely Kubrick's best work.

What movie isn't? If I had said Kong, you would have said that too. Or maybe the Godfather?
Yes and yes. :)
What movie isn't overrated? Let me take a stab at that:
1) Bad movies that are so obviously bad that no reasonable person can fail to realise that they are bad. For examples, see your typical worst 100 movies list.
2) Good movies that are good in subtle ways that many reasonable people fail to notice. Look up some top 100 lists, whether popular or by a pool of critics. Ask why there are not more (or any) movies by Bresson, Ozu, Leigh, and Dreyer in those lists.
3) Good or bad movies which are largely ignored by the critics and the general public. By this I mean, the vast universe of tuly independent films, made by a single artist or a group of artists whose focus is not the creation of a marketable product.

Often films in this last group actually are overrated – but only by the 4.5 people that have actually seen them... :tongue2:

There are many movies that expose pretty much every sides of American women.. on the top of my head: Double Filled Cream Teens 5, Tight Teen Tails 3, Slut Puppies, Gooey Buns 2, Chunky School Girls 4, ........ :tongue2:
There is no special psychology for American women; they all work the same way all around the globe. But here are three good movies I know of. The lesson is to be taken from what the guys do, actually.
Watch 'A Streetcar Named Desire' with Marlon Brando (10 red giant stars on the cosmological quasar scale). Marlon Brando is a sexy biach in this movie, while that 'Mitch' guy does all the wrong things with Blanche's sister.
Don Juan de Marco with Johnny Depp (8 stars). Has some interesting insights, but nothing extraordinary.
Titanic (10 stars) with Leo :!!) Dicaprio. Same thing.
OMG! a saw2! forst one scared me to death. yay! the first one was exellent though. definitely reccomend it.
someone posted cube earlier, alse a great movie. also, cube 2: hypercube, and the prequel: cube zero. exellent special effects

Concerning the actual topic of the thread, I recommend watching (because they're my fav movies :!!) )...
Requiem for a Dream - This is the kind of movie that after its over you spend 10 minutes staring at the blank TV creen. Totally mind-blowing. For optimum results, watch in complete obscurity. (10 stars)
Cidade de Deus ('City of God' in english) - Enigmatic title; just see it to see what it's about. This movie is to be watched with the lights on. (10 stars)
Raging Bull - A biographical film about the middleweight champ, the physically tough, but emotionally self-destructive Jake LaMotta. With Robert -the man- De Niro. (10 stars)
Pulp Fiction - No comment. (10 stars)
Fight Club - No comment. (10 stars)
Forrest Gump - No comment. (10 stars)
Other drug movies that totally kick: The Basketball Diaries (10 stars), Drugstore Cowboys (8 stars), Trainspotting (8 stars), Blow (7 stars)

Cuz it needs no comment in the sense that everybody knows what pulp fiction, fight club and forest gump are.
Casino was kewl .
The beatiful adaptations of E.M Forster's novels by Merchant&Ivory are, IMO, some of the best "period pieces" ever made. Both "Howard's End" and "A room with a view" are great movies, and I must add to that list "Maurice" as well, probably the best gay lovestory ever brought on screen.
Sadly, Ismael Merchant passed away a few months ago.

I'd forgotten how much I liked those.
My favorited comedies are - Kind Hearts and Coronets, Diner de Cons and Les Visiteurs (not the terrible American version), Dr Strangelove and most things Peter Sellers was in, especially Shot In the Dark and the other Pink Panthers.
Blasphemy!!!
A listing of comedies without "A fish called Wanda" at the very top??
That's just perverse..

 My mistake
Well my favourite goes :
Pirates of the Carribean
Ace Ventura:Pet Detective
Gone in sixty Seconds
A Beautiful Mind
Recently saw Legend of 1900 on dvd, I think it was a great movie in its own right, not a great film to see with friends or family either...better if one watched it alone at the end of a long day with a nice glass of wine.

Watch "Team America: World Police" It has to be one of the funnest movies I have ever seen. Beware; some of the content may be consider this movie to be "offisive". So don't say I did warn you.
I agree i`ve watched it about 5 times now and laugh so hard i cry every time Kim Jong Il comes on.
Watch it only if you like south park! I made my farther watch it and he asked me to turn it off (Heathen!) as he objected to all the swearing!
Well, I'm not exactly a big fan of South Park, but I loved Team America..
And it had great puppetry ;)
And i quitted watching this movie after exactly 10 minutes coz of puppetry!

And how funny is it to watch two puppets trying to do Karate!

but the limitations of the puppets can only and to the humour.
One of my favourite scenes is with the Panthers ... worth watching the film for!

There is some interesting stuntwork in The Transporter 2. Four new film clips here (the Allocine page connects slowly at first; French is dubbed in):

yeah, actually, the puppets were supposed to be more life like. the creators cut down their abilities to add to the humor

I saw previews for that - it looks cool.It looks pretty slick (if you like slick, then slick = good here) to me. But I got the impression from the clips that a lot of the action was faked. The fight scenes all have the cameras cutting away too soon so you can't tell if what is suggested by the scene was really happening during the filming. IOW, in The Matrix the cast was trained to actually perform the fights so it would look realistic, and I don't think that was the case here.
The firehose was a unique and clever idea, I thought. The car jump was a great scene. Overall, the tone of the film seems to be Jerry lewis meets James Bond. The humor seems very French and therefore makes me wince. Maybe the best way to describe this movie is: Amelie with guns and luxury-performance automobiles.
Did you see the first one?No. I don't watch movies very often. I think I might have seen a movie as recently as a few years ago.

They do Matrixesque effects too (heh, say that three times fast). My brother was familiar with one of the main characters, Mark Dacascos, as a martial artist. It's just a great movie all around. Maybe not your usual style - it's French - sumptuous, grand, some Frenchish humor, but if you're ever in the mood...
No. I don't watch movies very often. I think I might have seen a movie as recently as a few years ago.Too busy drinking Cheez Whiz, I presume. :tongue2:

I originally saw that movie during one of the late night showings at the Sunset Five with an ex-heroin and speed junkie. She had to leave halfway through the movie because it was bringing back so many bad feelings.

You're pretty into drug movies, aren't you?
I'm gonna add SAWII to this list after just seeing it

Oh yes, most drug movies are great. As one IMDB reviewer of Requiem put it: "They make your soul cry."
