The discussion revolves around strategies for sleeping on airplanes, particularly in economy class. Participants share various techniques and personal experiences related to achieving sleep during flights, considering factors such as flight duration and individual preferences.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express discomfort with economy class seating and seek effective sleeping techniques.
  • There are suggestions that sleeping pills may be beneficial for international flights, while sleep deprivation before shorter flights could also help.
  • One participant mentions that a suitable amount of alcohol, flying at night, and using blindfolds or earplugs can aid sleep, but warns against excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Another approach proposed is to bring work to do on the flight, which may lead to falling asleep naturally.
  • Some participants note that the availability of sleeping pills varies by country, with one mentioning that they find early rising, light alcohol consumption, music, and reading effective for inducing sleep.
  • A participant suggests taking Benadryl as a method to fall asleep quickly.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple competing views on effective sleeping strategies, with no consensus on a single best approach. Some express reluctance towards using medications, while others advocate for them.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention varying availability of sleeping aids in different countries and the subjective nature of sleep strategies based on individual preferences and flight conditions.

I ride on economic class and the seats are crammed, uncomfortable, and just overall terrible.

I've tried many sleeping techniques on the seat, but none of them are reasonable comfortable. Anyone got any techniques?

Depends how long the flight is and what mental condition you need to be in when you arrive. Sleeping pills can be good for international flights, and just depriving yourself of sleep before a domestic can be useful too.

Suitable amount of alchohol. Flying at night, when sleepy. Blindfold/earplugs/blanket. Avoid looking at attractive parts of stewardesses.

Too much alcohol, and not following last advice might be trouble.

Bring a lot of legitimate work that needs to get done. You'll naturally neglect it and fall asleep.

Dude I am like 19, I don't want to do drugs lol.

Taking a treatment for insomnia can hardly be described as 'doing drugs'.

If you don't want to chemically aid sleep. Use the tray from your food to repeatedly smash your head until unconsciousness is induced.

I take no responsibility for any adverse effects caused by this sleep inducing method.

Depending on where you a from sleeping pills are often not readily available (I'm looking at you non-US countries).

I find that getting up quite early before the flight, having a small amount of alcohol, listening to music and reading a book all make me incredibly sleepy on a plane

I take a benedryl and go right out.
