Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the suitability of a specific book for self-learning thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, particularly in relation to the topics covered on the GRE. Participants are exploring whether the book adequately addresses key concepts and prepares students for the GRE exam.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the appropriateness of a specific book for learning thermodynamics and statistical mechanics independently, listing key topics of interest.
  • Another participant mentions that the book is popular and comparable to Griffith's texts, although they have not personally read it.
  • A follow-up question asks whether the book covers the necessary material for the GRE in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, as well as foundational knowledge for a B.S. in physics.
  • A participant expresses uncertainty about the book's content, indicating they have not read it.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the book's suitability, and there is uncertainty regarding its coverage of the necessary topics for the GRE and undergraduate physics education.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of firsthand experience with the book and potential variations in individual learning needs and preferences.

Who May Find This Useful

Undergraduate students preparing for the GRE in physics, individuals seeking self-study resources in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics.

I'm going into my third undergraduate year and have yet to take a course on thermodynamics and statistical physics, and want a book to learn from on my own: is https://www.amazon.com/dp/1577666127/?tag=pfamazon01-20 a good book for learning the important topics of thermodynamics/stat mech.? I especially want to focus on the GRE's list of concepts:

Thermodynamics/Statistical Mechanics
Laws of Thermodynamics
Thermodynamic Processes
Equations of State
Ideal Gasses
Kinetic Theory
Ensembles
Statistical Concepts/Calculation of Thermodynamic Quantities

Thank you!

From what I've heard, it's on the level of Griffith's texts in terms of popularity. I've never had a chance to read it, however.

Thanks for the response, Pengwuino. Would a book such as this one cover the material one would need to know for the Thermo/Stat Mech. portion of the GRE (and stuff (s)he should know if they will be holding a B.S. in physics)?

Yah I can imagine, although I've never read it.
