SUMMARY

Wearing goggles underwater is essential for clear vision due to the principles of refraction. Water and corneal tissue have similar indices of refraction, which results in light not being focused correctly by the time it reaches the retina. This lack of focus causes distortion in vision, making it difficult to see straight without corrective lenses like goggles. Goggles create an air pocket in front of the eyes, allowing light to refract properly, enhancing visual clarity underwater.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of optical physics, specifically refraction
  • Knowledge of the human eye anatomy, particularly the cornea
  • Familiarity with indices of refraction
  • Basic principles of light behavior in different mediums
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the physics of refraction and its impact on vision
  • Explore the anatomy of the human eye and how it interacts with different mediums
  • Study the design and function of swimming goggles
  • Investigate other optical devices that correct vision in various environments
USEFUL FOR

Individuals interested in optics, swimming enthusiasts, and anyone seeking to understand the science behind underwater vision correction.

I have a question i know it has something to do with refraction but uh... why do we need to wear goggles underwater to see straight>??

water and corneal tissue have about the same indices of refraction so light isn't as focused by the time it reaches the retina, as it would be after traveling through air first
