SUMMARY

The molecular formula of galactose is C6H12O6. When 8 galactose molecules undergo dehydration synthesis, the correct molecular formula is C48H80O40, not C48H80H40. Dehydration synthesis involves the removal of water, which consists of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom for each bond formed. Therefore, for 8 galactose molecules, a total of 16 hydrogen atoms and 8 oxygen atoms are subtracted from the total, leading to the correct formula.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of molecular formulas and chemical structures
  • Knowledge of dehydration synthesis in biochemistry
  • Familiarity with basic stoichiometry

The molecular formula of galactose is C6H12O6

If 8 galactose molecues were linked together by dehydration synthesis, the new molecular formula wil be C48H80H40 right?

did i do my math wrong?

Dehydration synthesis is just the loss of water , so a total of 16 Hydrogens and 8 Oxygens will be subtracted from the total molecular formula for 8 * (C6H12O6) which is C48H80H40

or am i missing a key concept here?

thanks
