SUMMARY

Inserting HTML tags into words, such as "tur[ b][/b]nip," effectively bypasses language filters and web blockers used by institutions like colleges and libraries. This method exploits the limitations of automated filtering systems, allowing users to circumvent restrictions on explicit language. However, it is important to note that human moderators employed by companies maintaining block lists can still identify and address such tactics. Therefore, while this technique may provide temporary relief from filters, it is not a foolproof solution.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of HTML tag syntax
  • Familiarity with language filtering mechanisms
  • Knowledge of web blocking technologies
  • Awareness of institutional internet policies
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the effectiveness of various HTML tag combinations for bypassing filters
  • Explore advanced language filtering techniques used by institutions
  • Investigate the role of human moderators in maintaining block lists
  • Learn about alternative methods for circumventing web blockers
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for web developers, content moderators, and individuals seeking to understand the limitations of language filters and web blocking technologies.

On a message board that I'm moderating, we have a language filter installed. We frankly don't mind bad language, but the problem is many of our users acess from colleges, libraries etc, which block pages with bad language in them. One of our users has figured out that inserting tags into a word like this "tur[ b][/b]nip" will bypass our filters. Does anyone know if this will work to bypass the filters and web blockers that the college networks etc. use?

It'll be missed by automated filters and web blockers. Of course, the companies that maintain block lists have real people working for them, too, and such a trick won't fool the people.
