Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the experiences and parts involved in building small jet engines, with a focus on various types of engines, including turbochargers, ram jets, and specific models like the Shreckling and Treco TG-301-1. Participants share their interests, past experiences, and seek information on specific engine types and their applications.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant mentions that home-built jet engines are often external can burners based on turbochargers and suggests searching online for resources.
  • Another participant recalls their family’s experience with building ram jet engines for free flight and control line models, referencing a dynajet engine.
  • A different participant expresses interest in building a Shreckling jet engine as a simpler beginner project.
  • One participant is looking for information on the Treco TG-301-1 jet engine, including its history and suitability for ultralite or experimental use.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have varying interests and experiences related to different types of jet engines, and there is no consensus on a specific approach or model to pursue.

Contextual Notes

Some participants reference historical models and their availability, indicating potential limitations in sourcing parts or information. The discussion includes personal anecdotes and specific engine models, which may not be widely documented.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in building small jet engines, hobbyists in model aircraft, and those researching historical engine designs may find this discussion relevant.

Has anyone here ever built a small Jet engine?
Just generally interested in how you did it
and from what parts
thanks

I work with them almost every day. What exactly are you looking for?

The home built models are usually external can burners based on turbochargers. If you do a google search for homebuilt jets you'll find quite a few web pages dedicated to the topic.

My dad and uncle used to build ram jet engines for free flight and u-control models (ahh the 50's and 60's when you could get stuff a lot easier). I remember them mentioning something called a dynajet engine (?) for freeflight, u-control and older R/C aricraft? I'm not sure whether googling that will help in the info search though.

i am looking into more of a Shreckling jet engine
as a simpler and smaller beginner project possibly

I am searching for some info on the Treco TG-301-1 jet engine, it was featured in the Feb. 1956 Popular Science magazine, and was a "School Project" engine for machining schools and A & P schools. I found a blurry set of plans on ebay, but was wondering if anyone knew of one, or for it's suitability as an ultralite/experimental power plant.
