I'm running Windows XP on a PC. How do I format the C:\ drive so I can wipe that drive clean and then reinstall windows XP??

The discussion revolves around the process of formatting and reinstalling Windows XP on a PC using a bootable CD. Participants explore various methods for formatting the C:\ drive, the use of fdisk, and the implications of different file systems, particularly NTFS.
Participants express a mix of agreement on the ease of using the Windows XP CD for formatting, while there is disagreement on the relevance and utility of fdisk versus modern alternatives. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approach for users with specific hardware limitations.
Some participants note limitations in accessing DOS or using fdisk due to hardware configurations, such as the absence of a floppy drive. There are also references to the need for a boot disk to access command prompts, which may vary based on the operating system and computer manufacturer.
This discussion may be useful for individuals looking to format and reinstall Windows XP, particularly those encountering challenges with partitioning and file systems, as well as users of older hardware configurations.
Thanks. That was one of the things that I tried but I didn't see how to do it that way. Perhaps I missed something. I'll give it another whirl. And I learned a long time ago to never place data on the same partition as my system. That's asking for trouble.Nylex said:I'm not sure about fdisk. However, if you boot from your XP CD, during the setup process, it'll ask you if you want to format your partition(s). Remember to back up any important data first!

Yup. That's what did the trick. Problem now is that new popups got onto my system easily and almost seem to pop up when I type so many words. I'd like to smack the a-hole who created this software to do this.Pengwuino said:A much easier way to do this is into boot the windows XP cd. From there, you can delete the NTFS partition and format a new one very simply.
Did you connect to the internet before you turned on Window's or your own firewall? I made that mistake before and just reformatted again quickly.pmb_phy said:Yup. That's what did the trick. You don't need fdisk for that either: just make the primary partition smaller than the size of your hard drive when installing windows, then create more partitions through windows.Mental Gridlock said:I guess we can say DOS is obselete and to do anything through it is pointless right?
