Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the concepts of energy and momentum in physics, specifically regarding two equal masses traveling towards each other. The original poster questions whether the total energy of the system is zero or twice the energy of one mass, while also considering the nature of momentum in this context.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the distinction between kinetic energy and momentum, questioning whether energy should be treated as a vector quantity. There is also a discussion about the implications of considering the masses as a system.

Discussion Status

Some participants have provided clarifications regarding the scalar nature of kinetic energy and the concept of net momentum in a system. The conversation reflects an ongoing exploration of these concepts without reaching a definitive conclusion.

Contextual Notes

The original poster expresses uncertainty about the relationship between energy and momentum in this scenario, indicating a potential gap in understanding that is being addressed through the discussion.

if two equal masses with equal speed are traveling towards each other, do they have 0 total energy, or twice the energy of one mass?
I know they will have 0 total momemtum, but I can't remeber if adding their energy is a vector thing or not.

Its not a vector problem and how can they have 0 momentum if they are both in motion.

If they are considered as a system then the system has zero net momentum. Each individual component has its own momentum vector according to its path. Their kinetic energy is the sum of the kinetic energies of each piece, KE is a scalar and not a vector.

ok, that's what i was thinking but wasn't positive.
thanks
