Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of leptons in physics, exploring their significance through creative expressions such as poetry. Participants engage with the idea of leptons, their properties, and their role in the universe, while also reflecting on the intersection of art and science.

Discussion Character

 • Exploratory
 • Conceptual clarification
 • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

 • One participant presents a poem that personifies leptons, describing their characteristics and interactions in a whimsical manner.
 • Another participant praises the poem for its novel theme and entertaining style, suggesting that personifying charged particles is a creative approach.
 • A different participant questions whether art could serve as a natural form of discourse to discuss quantum behavior, reflecting on the complexities of quantum theory.
 • A later reply references an older poem about a water molecule, indicating a thematic connection between the two poetic works.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express appreciation for the creative exploration of scientific concepts, but there is no consensus on the role of art in discussing quantum mechanics or the significance of leptons beyond the poetic interpretations.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes various interpretations and expressions related to leptons and quantum theory, but lacks a rigorous scientific analysis or resolution of the themes presented.

Once there was a Lepton
A Lepton!
A Lepton!
Once there was a Lepton!
A Charged Particle!

Now who's this lepton you might ask?
Put your int'lect to the task!
It can move quite very fast!
Antiparticle is in the past!

I'll try to give you another clue
If you see one you might see two.
Hiding in their lowest shell
Does any of this ring a bell?

Bouncing up to a higher rung
Catching a photon just for fun
Droping back to a lower state
Sending a photon to its fate.

Hiding from within its cloud
Position is completely shroud
If you know the exact speed
Where it went none can heed.

Quantum is as Quantum does
From Atomic giant to querky Quark
All these objects are quite the buzz
Upon the universal tuning fork.

It's partner is a nucleon
Dancing within the nucleus
Trading gluons with its buddy
Who is neutral, did you study?

Why this flighty Fermion
Is indeed the E-lectron!
And its partner you'd have guessed
Is a proton in its hadron vest.

Positron in Positronium
Spining round its Electronium
If they get too juxtaposium
Vanishing in Gamma Rosium

Once there was a Lepton
A Lepton!
A Lepton!
Once there was a Lepton!
A Charged Particle!

I run away

You took your love away
Too fast
Left no chance to say
Look Back
Now I know the truth
It makes it easier
Maybe when time goes by
I'll understand

Lets pretend that I moved on
Then I'll tell myself that life goes on without you
Open my eyes, look deep inside
I run away, I run away, I run away

You threw it all away
So blind
Pushed me far from you
In your life
And now I know the tears won't lead to lonliness
Baby when time goes by
I'll understand

Lets pretend that I moved on
Then I'll tell myself that life goes on without you
Open my eyes, look deep inside
I run away, I run away, I run away

I run away
I run away
I run away

Lets pretend that I moved on
Then I'll tell myself that life goes on without you
Open my eyes, look deep inside
I run away, I run away

I run away

Lets pretend that I moved on
Then I'll tell myself that life goes on without you
Open my eyes, look deep inside
I run away, I run away

Strawberry Fields
Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout
Strawberry Fields forever

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me
Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout
Strawberry Fields forever

No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right, that is I think it's not too bad

Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout
Strawberry Fields forever

Always, no sometimes, think it's me, but you know I know when it's a dream
I think I know I mean a "Yes" but it's all wrong, that is I think I disagree

Let me take you down, 'cos I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout
Strawberry Fields forever
Strawberry Fields forever
Strawberry Fields forever

Zezman, future poet laureate
Ignore this sad and sorry lot
Your poem broached a novel theme
With an erratic rhyming scheme
But no less entertaining for it
In fact, I personally adore it
Personifying charged particles
Is nothing short of farcical
And I mean that as a compliment
I'm not saying you're incompetent
In fact, rather the opposite
Zezman, future poet laureate

The question I wish I had an answer for
has nothing to do with rhythm or rhyme,
although it may appear like a modern poem
if I break it into short lines, as follows:
Since quantum theory is so confusing
and improbable to the rational,
deterministic mind, can art
be the natural form of discourse
to discuss the behavior of matter
at very small scales?
I mean it, seriously.
(I am going to grog me some quanta,
preferably in a liquid state.)

Here's an older poem that The Lepton was losely based upon:

The Water Molecule
Copyright © 2004

Once there was a molecule
A molecule
A molecule!
Once there was a molecule of water!

And then it flew!
This molecule
And then it flew
Thru a cloud or two.

It went right up
And up and down
It went right up
Thru a cloud.

And round and round
This molecule flew around
A cloud that frowned
Then down it went, to the ground.

It said "Oh my! Oh my!"
The molecule was picked right up
In a drop! A drop of rain
"What am I to gain?"

And round and round
The drop of rain it flew
Thru a cloud or two
And round the drop of rain it flew.

Quoth molecule:
"If this is my pension,
I can't escape this surface tension!"
The molecule had to mention!

Up and down and round and round!
The drop of rain it flew
then down to the ground
It fell and fell.

"Oh no! Oh no!
What am I to do!"
Said the molecule in its plight
"Stop this crazy hydro-flight!"

Then the wind it came right out
And blew and blew
The drop of rain
It blew the drop of rain to the sky!

The drop of rain, cold as ice
Froze that day, into hail
"Oh great, this is nice"
Said the molecule who wished to bail.

"Wonderful, now I'm stoned"
The molecule now bemoaned
"How will I ever become free?"
Then the hailstone hit a tree.

"Hey you broke my twig!"
Said the tree who grew a fig
"Until you fell it was big!"
The molecule danced a jig.

For it had become free!
From the grasp of the stone
Upon impact it was thrown
It now made its plee!

"Don't bemoan your broken limb!"
Said the molecule with a grin
"Maybe you needed a trim,
Now you look quite slim!"

Then the sun it came that day
When the clouds went their way
Tossed about by the gale
Wisps of sky that are quite frail.

At this point I do demarcate
Would the molecule evaporate?
With a smile I relate to you
The molecule became some dew.
