Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the promotion of 'What the Bleep' merchandise on Physics Forums, including concerns about the nature of the advertisements and their appropriateness within the community focused on scientific discourse.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the advertisements are generated by Google's ad system, which selects ads based on relevant keywords from the forum.
  • Others express indifference towards the ads, noting that they do not click on them and understand the need for the forum to generate revenue.
  • A few participants mention that contributors do not see ads as a perk of their membership.
  • Concerns are raised about the appropriateness of promoting certain merchandise, particularly given the controversial nature of the content associated with 'What the Bleep' and the "water doctor".
  • Some participants indicate that there are options to report or block undesirable ads, and that forum administrators can manage ad content upon request.
  • There are humorous interjections and references to unrelated topics, which seem to divert from the main discussion about ads.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the ads are part of Google's system and that contributors do not see them. However, there is disagreement regarding the appropriateness of the specific ads being promoted, with some expressing concern about the credibility of the content.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention that the forum's revenue model relies on ads, which may influence the types of advertisements displayed. The discussion also highlights a lack of consensus on how to handle ads that some find objectionable.

Why is PF promoting 'What the Bleep' merchandise at the top - including the books by the "water doctor" etc?

I believe that those are google ads and PF has no control over what pops up...

But I don't mind them since I just don't click them. After all, this website needs to make money, right?

Its google's ad system. It picks out relevant words from the forum and matches them with words in its advertising database to display "relevant" advertisements.

I think there is some way of reporting ones that you think are bad.

Yah, greg says he can tell google to stop displaying certain ads.

Thanks pattylou, I forwarded the link to Greg.

Does nobody listen to my posts telling them how to disable the ads?

I have looked all over and can not see any adds

Contributors don't see any ad. It is part of the perks you get when you pay.

My concern isn't that *I* see the ads.

I don't really care if others see the ads, either. But the show was panned here, soundly and repeatedly, the water doctor's science seems awfully questionable, ... An ad selling his book seems about as reasonable as selling something promoting geocentrism... on the Physics Forums.

Does that not seem a bit out of place?

Firefox has an extention that can block specified web content, aka ads.
