SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on resources for understanding the physics of drums, specifically for a Year 10 assignment. Key websites provided include animations and explanations of drum resonance and standing waves, such as Kettering University's demonstration of membrane modes and the University of Saskatchewan's basic equations for drum membranes. Additional resources cover topics like resonant energy transfer and drum tuning. These references are essential for grasping the fundamental physics concepts related to drums.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of wave physics
  • Familiarity with resonance concepts
  • Knowledge of standing waves
  • Access to online educational resources
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore Kettering University's drum resonance animations
  • Study the standing wave equations from the University of Saskatchewan
  • Research resonant energy transfer in musical instruments
  • Learn about drum tuning techniques and their impact on sound
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, particularly those interested in acoustics and musical instruments, as well as educators seeking resources for teaching the physics of sound and resonance.

Here are a few websites about physics of drums, to get you started..
(jusk click on the blue underlined text to see the reference). You can also find more using your favorite search engine with keywords "drums" and "physics".

Animations showing the various modes of ahttp://www.kettering.edu/~drussell/Demos/MembraneCircle/Circle.html (drum).. This one illustrates some nice animations of modes of resonance for a drum.

how about http://www.physics.usask.ca/~hirose/ep225/animation/drum/anim-drum.htm in a drum membrane.. This one goes into some basic equations for standing waves of a drum.

How about one on the http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/Stu/mjavadif/mec104/#physics ..
Here are a few topics they go into: Intro to Drums, Physics of the Drum, Resonant Energy Transfer/Resonance, Drums and their Pitches, Tuning of Drums.

Hope some of these websites may be helpful.
