SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the torque exerted by a 70 kg person standing 3.0 meters from the front support of a diving board. The torque is calculated using the formula τ = F * d, where F is the force due to gravity (686.7 N) and d is the distance from the pivot point (3.0 m). The final torque value is confirmed to be 2060.1 Nm, aligning with the expected answer of 2.1 x 103 m*N. The calculations demonstrate the application of static equilibrium principles in physics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of torque and its calculation
  • Knowledge of static equilibrium in physics
  • Familiarity with gravitational force calculations
  • Basic algebra for solving equations
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of static equilibrium in greater detail
  • Learn about different types of torque applications in engineering
  • Explore advanced torque calculations involving multiple forces
  • Investigate the effects of varying mass and distance on torque
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, engineers working on mechanical systems, and anyone interested in the principles of torque and static equilibrium.

Hello,
Alright, this is the problem:
Calculate the torque about the front support of a diving board exerted by a 70kg person 3.0m from that support
here's the picture:

________________person
|<-1.0m->|<--3.0m-->:

^ ^ ^
| | |
F1 F2 CG
Alright this is what i have done so far:

[tex]\sum T = 0[/tex]

[tex]\sum T = m*g*d_F1-F2 - m_p *g*d_F2-person = 0[/tex]

[tex]\sum T = m*g* 1.0m - 70.kg * g *3.0m = 0[/tex]

[tex]m*g*1.0m = 70.kg*g*3.0m[/tex]

[tex]m = (70.kg*g*3.0m)/(g*1.0m)[/tex]

[tex]m = 210kg[/tex]

I know the answer is supposed to be 2.1 x 10^3 m*N, but i don't know what to do after finding the mass on F1; can someone help me?

force from gravity:
70 * 9.81 = 686.7N

torque:
686.7 * 3 = 2060.1Nm

ooh i see, thank you :smile:
