Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the capture of a 49-foot python in Indonesia, exploring its size, the circumstances of its capture, and the authenticity of claims regarding its length. Participants share images, express curiosity about the snake's age and size, and speculate on the accuracy of reported measurements.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants mention the snake's diet, noting it is fed five full-grown dogs a month.
  • There is curiosity about the snake's age and size, with one participant wondering how old it is and speculating on the size of its head compared to a crocodile's.
  • Participants share links to images and express a desire for better representations of the snake's scale, including suggestions for photographs with people for comparison.
  • One participant questions the reported length of the snake, suggesting it may have been exaggerated as a publicity stunt, while another counters that such exaggerations are unlikely and proposes measurement errors.
  • Concerns are raised about the accuracy of the snake's reported length, with one participant citing a photographer's measurement that suggests the snake is actually around 6.5 meters long, significantly shorter than the claimed 15 meters.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the authenticity of the reported measurements of the snake's length, with some believing it may be exaggerated while others defend the original claims. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the true size of the snake and the motivations behind the reported figures.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved questions regarding the accuracy of the measurements and the potential for miscommunication in reporting. Participants also express uncertainty about the snake's age and the implications of its diet.

Thanks for those additional pictures, fish. This is an amazing reptile, indeed.

The amazing thing is that they only captured it a year ago, it used to be out in the jungle hunting..

I read about this a few days ago in one of britains tabloid newspapers but thought it was a joke!

Are there any better pictures out there that give a better representation of scale? Just how big is its head? I figure it must be about the size of a crocodiles head, well almost.

I have just done a quick search on google and only found the same pictures, will just have to travel to Indonesia to find out myself!

Bring a camera, and put the pictures where we can get to them. I'd be interested in seeing some better photos as well.

When a recreation park in Indonesia put a huge reticulated python on show last week, keepers insisted to reporters it was 15 metres long.

That made it the longest ever caught.

But amid growing scepticism of the claim, a photographer working for Reuters returned to the Curugsewu park in the small central Java town of Kendal on Wednesday with a measuring tape.

The snake's true length - around 6.5 metres.
Starts to sound like a publicity stunt??

No, people don't do things like that. The snake must have shrunk 8.5 meters or maybe it was originally measured in feet and they were not good with conversions.
