Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around Intel's development of PCI Express technology and its implications for PC performance. Participants express varying opinions on the effectiveness and practicality of PCI Express compared to legacy ports and other connection standards.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asserts that Intel's development of PCI Express will significantly enhance PC performance.
  • Another participant expresses skepticism, suggesting that PCI Express may lead to complications due to the introduction of specialized versions for different types of cards.
  • A later reply challenges the claim about specialized versions, stating that PCI Express only varies in bandwidth through different slot configurations (1X - 16X) and does not create specialized versions.
  • Another participant advocates for a more straightforward connection standard, comparing PCI Express unfavorably to USB and Firewire, citing frustrations with IRQ problems.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach consensus, with multiple competing views on the effectiveness and practicality of PCI Express technology.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the comparison of PCI Express to legacy ports and other connection standards, as well as differing interpretations of what constitutes "specialized versions" of PCI Express slots.

...alright?

PCI-E is going to be a disaster. The whole point was to do away with legacy ports, yet there's going to be specialized versions for different kinds of cards.

?

PCI-E doesn't provide 'specialized versions for different kinds of cards', only slots providing different amounts of bandwidth (1X -16X) by differing the number of 'lanes' (serial connections).

Did I miss a memo or something?

Everything needs to be like USB or Firewire. Just plug it in and go. I hate IRQ problems.
