SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the possible orbits in a potential defined by V = k r^4, considering both positive and negative values of k and angular momentum l. For k < 0, if l = 0, the object falls to the center, while if l > 0, it can either follow a hyperbolic trajectory or fall to the center. For k > 0, with l = 0, the trajectory is hyperbolic, and with l > 0, the object again follows a hyperbola or falls to the center. Circular orbits are ruled out due to the asymmetry of the potential.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of classical mechanics and orbital dynamics
  • Familiarity with potential energy functions
  • Knowledge of angular momentum concepts
  • Basic grasp of hyperbolic trajectories in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the implications of potential energy asymmetry on orbital stability
  • Explore the mathematical derivation of hyperbolic orbits in varying potentials
  • Study the conditions for circular orbits in different potential fields
  • Investigate the role of angular momentum in determining orbital paths
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for physicists, students of classical mechanics, and anyone interested in orbital dynamics and potential energy analysis.

Assume energy greater than 0.
Consider cases in which k is either + or - and l is either 0 or +.

Using your tuition, what are the possible orbits?

k<0:
l=0: falls to the center
l=+: hyperbola or it falls to the center

k>0:
l=0: hyperbola
l=+: hyperbola or it falls to the center

what about circular orbits?

In this potential, circular orbits are not possible since the potential is not symmetric. The only possible stable orbits are hyperbolas or falling to the center.
