SUMMARY

Quantization is the process of converting a continuous signal into a discrete signal by breaking down a continuous range of values into a finite set of values. This concept is crucial in digital signal processing (DSP), where analog signals are transformed into digital formats for efficient processing and storage. Quantization reduces the data required to represent a signal, enhancing efficiency in systems handling audio and video processing. The fundamental principle of quantization is that certain values can only exist as specific multiples of a fundamental unit, exemplified by the quantization of electric charge, which can only exist in whole number multiples of the elementary charge "e."

Simple answer:

for example "quantization of electric charge" means that electric charge can only exist in multiples of a certain "fundamental" amount. Specifically, the charge of one electron is the smallest possible charge for a particle, so that amount is known as "e"

If any object has a net electric charge on it, the total chage must be some whole number (no fractions or decimals)times "e."

So you can't have an object with a charge of 1.75 times e, for example.

Quantization means that certain values can only exist as specific (we say "discreet") multiples of a fundamental value.

Quantization refers to the process of converting a continuous signal into a discrete signal. In other words, it involves breaking down a continuous range of values into a finite set of values. This is commonly used in digital signal processing, where analog signals are converted into digital signals for processing and storage. Quantization helps to reduce the amount of data needed to represent a signal, making it more efficient for digital systems to handle. It is an important concept in fields such as audio and video processing, where precise representation of signals is crucial.
