Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the operating systems (OS) used by computer users, with a focus on identifying the most commonly used OS among participants. The scope includes personal preferences, comparisons between older and newer systems, and the context of usage in different environments such as home and university.

Discussion Character

  • Poll-related
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the specific OS used by others, suggesting that responses should focus on the lesser-used OS if there are differences between work and home environments.
  • Another participant reports using Windows XP Pro at home and Windows 2000 or a Unix network at university, highlighting the differences in their computing environments.
  • A participant expresses a preference for Windows 98 due to family preferences, indicating a potential switch to Windows XP and dual-booting with Linux in the future.
  • One user claims to prefer Windows 98, stating that they also use Windows XP and other operating systems like Windows ME and 2000, but primarily work on Windows 98.
  • Another participant argues that Windows 98 is inferior to Windows XP, which they currently use.
  • There are suggestions that the thread might be better suited for a technology forum, with some participants expressing concerns about post counts related to polls and general questions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of opinions on the preferred operating systems, with some favoring older systems like Windows 98 and others advocating for newer systems like Windows XP. There is no consensus on which OS is superior, and the discussion reflects differing preferences and experiences.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention specific environments (home vs. university) and the influence of family preferences on their OS choices. There is also a discussion about the appropriateness of the thread's placement in the forum.

I have some questions about computer users settings and specs, so I'll use here as my audience, if it isn't minded.

Earlier a poll on OS was done. Since most users fell into two broad catagories, I'm interested to see the specifics of those two.

Please post the OS you use the most. If your office and work are different, I think posting the lesser of the two would be better, because I really want to see who uses win 95 and 98 versus the higher end ones. SO post the lower of the two if they're different.

At home I'm currently using Windows XP Pro. At uni I use Windows 2000 or the monstrous Unix network, which has more storage than the rest of the world put together (well, maybe not quite that much).

I wasn't sure where it'd go. Ya can move it if you want!

Then people get post counts, I don't think polls and general questions should get to count towards posts, anyways...

I chose Windows 98 because my dad doesn't like XP, or 2K, or linux:frown: When I go to college I'm switching to XP and probably dual-booting with linux.

well the best is win98 ... i like it...
if i need a lot of memory i go to winxp (these tow or on one of my HDD)
on the other one i have win ME and 2k but usually i work on the first hdd

win98 seems horrendous to me compared to XP (pro) which I'm on now.

This should be in technology if you have question about computer users settings and specs... I suppose it is up to zero though but it fits much better in tech.
