Why Is My Electric Potential Calculation Incorrect?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the incorrect calculation of electric potential and potential energy involving protons. The user applied the formula V=kQ/r to find the electric potential at a distance of 3.0E-15m from a proton, resulting in 4.8E-25 V, which was incorrect. For the potential energy of a system with two protons 3.0E-15m apart, the user calculated 7.68E-44 J using V=k(1.6*10E-19)^2/r, which was also deemed incorrect. The error was attributed to arithmetic mistakes in the calculations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electric potential and potential energy concepts
  • Familiarity with Coulomb's law and the constant k
  • Basic arithmetic skills for scientific notation calculations
  • Knowledge of the charge of a proton (1.6 x 10^-19 C)
NEXT STEPS
  • Review the derivation and application of Coulomb's law
  • Learn about the electric potential due to point charges
  • Practice calculations involving electric potential and potential energy
  • Explore the concept of permittivity of free space (epsilon_0) in electric field calculations
USEFUL FOR

Students studying electromagnetism, physics educators, and anyone seeking to improve their understanding of electric potential and energy calculations in electrostatics.

I have done this problem over and over and keep getting the wrong answer. What is the electric potential a distance of 3.0E-15m away from a proton.

I used V=kQ/r and got 4.8E-25 V, and it says the answer is wrong.

The second part of the question asks what is the potential energy of a system that consists of 2 protons 3.0E-15m apart.

I used V=k(1.6*10E-19)^2/r and got 7.68E-44J and webassign told me it was wrong. Can anyone help
