Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the release of Baez week #207 and its contents, including references to a memoir by Sasha Polyakov related to string theory and gauge/string correspondence. Participants share links to the report and express their thoughts on the significance of the memoir.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Participants share links to Baez week #207, highlighting its availability on Physics Forums and the convenience of accessing it there.
  • Some participants note the clarity of the original formatting on Baez's website compared to the forum, particularly regarding quoted material from Stephen Hawking.
  • A participant introduces a memoir by Sasha Polyakov, discussing its historical context and relevance to string theory, mentioning topics like spontaneous symmetry breaking and gauge/string correspondence.
  • Another participant expresses admiration for Polyakov's work and the upcoming volume "Fifty Years of Yang-Mills Theory," suggesting it will be a valuable resource.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the significance of Baez week #207 and Polyakov's memoir, but there is no explicit consensus on the implications or interpretations of the topics discussed.

Contextual Notes

Some discussions may depend on specific interpretations of string theory concepts and the historical context provided in Polyakov's memoir, which remains unresolved.

Who May Find This Useful

Right you are! I first read it on PF, in fact. But the indentation
showing which blocks were direct quotes from hawking showed
up clearly in the original at Baez website so I decided to link to that. It is a
real convenience, I must say to have SPR readily available at PF!

BTW a piece that came out recently and should be of special interest to String Theory watchers was a memoir
by Sasha Polyakov

Confinement and Liberation
A. M. Polyakov
20 pages

"This is a review of topics which haunted me for the last 40 years, starting with spontaneous symmetry breaking and ending with gauge/string/space-time correspondence. While the first part of this article is mostly historical, the second contains some comments, opinions and conjectures which are new. This work is prepared for the volume ' Fifty Years of the Yang- Mills Theory' "

I have been going through Polyakov's memoir, pointed to it by Peter Woit's link, and I am deeply impressed with the man and his work. That book "Fifty Years of Yang-Mills Theory" is going to be a must-buy. Imagine having the collected technical reminiscences of the Argonauts!
