Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around calculating the potential difference required to accelerate a proton to a relativistic speed of 4/5 the speed of light. The subject area includes concepts from relativistic physics and electromagnetism.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Mathematical reasoning

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • The original poster attempts to relate kinetic energy and potential difference using the equation K = mc^2 (gamma - 1) and questions the correctness of their approach. Participants raise concerns about the units used for charge in the context of the problem.

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with participants providing feedback on the original poster's approach and pointing out unit discrepancies. There is no explicit consensus yet, but clarification on unit usage is being explored.

Contextual Notes

The problem requires the answer to be expressed in volts, which is a point of contention regarding the original poster's use of units.

Through what potential difference must a proton be accelerated in order to reach a speed of 4/5 c?? Answer in volts.

Since (in relativisitic terms) K = mc^2 (gamma -1)

then q dV = mc^2 (gamma -1 )

where dV is the potential difference

and q is the charge of the proton = 1.6 e -19 V

Am i right?? please do tell!

Good start! Just be careful with your units for charge - it is not measured in volts.

the answer is required in volts, however

Yes, but you wrote the charge in units of Volts.
