SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the theoretical possibility of a satellite sharing orbital foci with both the Sun and an extrasolar body, specifically Proxima Centauri. While it is theoretically feasible, the consensus is that such a scenario is highly improbable due to the negligible gravitational influence of Proxima Centauri compared to the dominant gravitational effects of the Milky Way. The conversation highlights the complexities of gravitational interactions in a multi-body system.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of gravitational dynamics in astrophysics
  • Familiarity with orbital mechanics
  • Knowledge of the Milky Way's gravitational influence
  • Basic concepts of celestial bodies and their interactions
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the gravitational dynamics of multi-body systems
  • Study orbital mechanics related to satellites and celestial bodies
  • Explore the gravitational influence of the Milky Way on nearby stars
  • Investigate theoretical models of shared orbital foci
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, astrophysicists, and students of celestial mechanics interested in the interactions between solar and extrasolar systems.

Can there exist a satellite which shares orbital foci with our Sun, and with the extrasolar likes of (e. g.) the Oort cloud - but in particular another star, say Proxima Centuri?

Although theoretically possible, it is highly unlikely. Alpha Centauri is so far away that the mutual gravitational attraction with our sun is negligible compared to overall Milky Way effect.

Thanks, mathman, that makes sense.
