Where Can I Find a Detailed Graph of Potential vs. Radius for All Orbits?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the need for a detailed graph illustrating the relationship between radius and potential energy for various orbits, including both bound and unbound types. Users express a desire for a visually appealing and informative graph that delineates the different energy curves and their corresponding orbits. The conversation suggests that individuals can create their own graphs using knowledge of Newtonian mechanics and Kepler's laws, along with a suitable graphing program.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Newton's laws of motion
  • Familiarity with Kepler's laws of planetary motion
  • Proficiency in using graphing software (e.g., MATLAB, Python with Matplotlib)
  • Knowledge of potential and kinetic energy concepts in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research how to implement Newton's laws in graphing software
  • Learn about Kepler's laws and their applications in orbital mechanics
  • Explore advanced graphing techniques using Python's Matplotlib library
  • Investigate the mathematical equations governing potential energy in orbital systems
USEFUL FOR

Students and educators in physics, astronomers, and anyone interested in visualizing orbital mechanics and energy relationships in celestial bodies.

I am looking for a good graph of the curve of radius vs. potential (and total) energy for all orbits, both bound and unbound. Basically I want one that is neat and has a lot of information on it, like where each orbit occurs (all 4), which curves are which energies, and possibly some analysis or signficant other facts about the graphs. I have found this curve in a few textbooks but nothing really pretty.
