Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the safety of inhaling ozone and its potential harmful effects on human health. Participants explore the toxicity of ozone, its impact on cellular respiration, and draw comparisons to the inhalation of pure oxygen.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that ozone is toxic due to its ability to generate free radicals, which can damage cells.
  • Others argue that ozone impairs cellular respiration and increases vulnerability to further damage from free radicals.
  • A participant raises a related question about the safety of inhaling pure oxygen, suggesting that it can irritate lung tissue if inhaled for extended periods.
  • Another participant notes that pure oxygen becomes toxic only at higher partial pressures, indicating a need for further research on specific thresholds.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that ozone is harmful when inhaled, but there is no consensus on the specifics of its toxicity or the implications of inhaling pure oxygen.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include a lack of specific data on the partial pressure of oxygen that leads to toxicity and the need for further clarification on the mechanisms of ozone's harmful effects.

Saw an Ozone generator in dad's office. It reminded me of an article which said that ozone is harmful when inhaled.
Is it really harmful?

Yes, it's quite toxic, as it generates free radicals in the body -- reactive oxygen species which damage your cells.

It is. It damages the ability of cells to respirate. Severely damaged cells must find other energy sources.. chiefly their neighboring, still healthy cells. Ozone also makes cells more vulnerable to damage by free radicals.

I was going to ask a similar question:
I heard that pure oxygen is harmful if it is the only gas a person is given to breathe. How far is this correct? If it is correct then what is the reason?
Pardon my bad english.

If pure oxygen is inhaled for an extended period of time it irritates lunge tissue.

However it doesn't get toxic until it partial-pressure get higher (sorry don't know the partial pressure, i'd have to look it up but i don't have the books here, just check a dive course manual)
