Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the differences between orbifolds and Calabi-Yau manifolds, as well as the existence of Calabi-Yau manifolds within a cubic meter of space. The scope includes theoretical concepts in mathematics and geometry.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for clarification on the differences between orbifolds and Calabi-Yau manifolds, indicating a lack of accessible information.
  • Another participant suggests using Wikipedia and Mathworld as resources for definitions and explanations, although they express feeling out of their depth.
  • A subsequent reply critiques the reliability of Wikipedia and Mathworld, suggesting that they may not provide comprehensive information on orbifolds.
  • Another participant notes that the quality of information on these sites can be inconsistent due to reliance on volunteer contributions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the differences between orbifolds and Calabi-Yau manifolds, and the discussion reflects uncertainty regarding the adequacy of existing resources.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights limitations in available definitions and explanations, particularly regarding orbifolds, and points to the potential for incomplete information due to the nature of collaborative editing on online resources.

Hi, here are a pair of questions that I can't find the answer:
What's the difference between an orbifold and a Calabi-Yau manifold?
How many Calabi-Yau manifolds there exist for cubic meter of space?

Looks like Wikipedia and Mathworld are slightly out of their depthe too, at least on orbifolds.

Problem is that both sites rely on volunteers to add new material. If no one has added anyhting, you won't find it.
