In the equation [tex]4x^2+kx+1=0[/tex] I'm supposed to find the value of k. But since there are two unknowns, it is only possible to find k expressed as a function of x right...?

Correct. Solve for k in terms of x, unless they said something like when x= 1 etc...

Well that's a quadratic set-up there; it seems to me that you would solve for x in terms of k, but that's really the same thing isn't it?
