SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a laser device designed for windmills that measures wind speeds several hundred meters ahead of the turbine. This technology allows for real-time adjustments to the blade angles, optimizing performance and efficiency. Thomas Hansen initiated the conversation seeking information on suppliers or producers of this laser device. Additionally, the technology has potential applications in aviation for detecting windshear and in astronomy for stabilizing images in telescopes.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of wind turbine mechanics and operations
  • Familiarity with laser measurement technologies
  • Knowledge of windshear phenomena in aviation
  • Basic principles of adaptive optics in astronomy
NEXT STEPS
  • Research suppliers of laser wind measurement devices for wind turbines
  • Explore the principles of adaptive optics and their applications in telescopes
  • Investigate the impact of windshear on aircraft performance
  • Learn about advancements in wind turbine blade adjustment technologies
USEFUL FOR

Hey there

Some months ago I read about a little gadget that was being mounted on windmills, a laserdevice, that could meassure windspeeds a couple of hundreds of meter in front of the mill, and adjust the angle of the blades accordingly. Do any of you people know anything about such a device ( the laserthingy ), please supply links to suppliers and/or producers... Thank you in advance.

Best regards

Thomas Hansen

It would be great for detecting windshear ahead of airplanes. A similar laser is used for correcting "seeing" (twinkling stars) through air for feedback to terrestrial flexible telescopes.
