Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a news article about an aspiring physicist sentenced for vandalism against SUVs, prompting a debate on the intelligence and judgment of physicists as a group. Participants explore themes of stereotypes, humor, and the implications of actions taken by individuals within a profession.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion
  • Humor

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express skepticism about labeling the individual as a physicist, emphasizing the term "aspiring" and suggesting that he does not represent the profession.
  • There is a discussion about the distinction between intellect and good judgment, with some arguing that intelligence does not equate to wise decision-making.
  • A participant humorously questions the seriousness of the original post, suggesting it was intended as a joke.
  • Another participant defends physicists, indicating a sense of disbelief at the negative portrayal and questioning whether physicists would reciprocate support for engineers.
  • Some participants engage in light-hearted banter about grammar and communication styles in online discussions, noting the challenges of conveying tone in text.
  • One participant points out the irony of the vandalism, suggesting that the act may have caused more environmental harm than the vehicles themselves.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of humor and serious critique, with no clear consensus on the implications of the actions of the aspiring physicist or the broader characterization of physicists. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the stereotypes and judgments being made.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference the lack of punctuation in the original post's title as a point of contention, indicating a focus on communication style rather than the substantive issues raised.

you are quite wrong.

"LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- An aspiring physicist was sentenced Monday to more than eight years in prison and ordered to pay $3.5 million for his role in a spree of arson and vandalism that targeted gas-guzzling Hummers and other sports utility vehicles."

Kudos to the man.

I'd like to emphasize the word "ASPIRING"...He wasn't a pedigree physicist...

I still think they're normal individuals,just like anyone else...Just smarter...:-p

Daniel.

so did he bomb the quals or was he just spraying SUVs

There's a big difference between intellect and good judgement.

What a waste.

So, since children were responsible for Columbine massacre, does that make all children killers?

With 300+ posts I'm amused you haven't really gotten the gist of this community.. to start a topic with that title, stereotype everyone under their profession, and then draw a conclusion all in one sentence, without any punctuation marks, is pretty indicative of your prejudice towards those superior to your intellectual capability

LOL calm down people, it was a little joke... (how iz mi grammar?)

im in engineering and I am defending physicists.. unbelivable what this world is coming to

Would you then please, for Chissakes, use smilies? I suspected a less-than-serious approach to that based upon a couple of your previous posts, but it's far from a 'given'.

edit: PS: Yur gramer kinda xucks.

 I like being nonchalant when joking on the forums. Using smiles just gives it away. The problem with posting on the internet is that you can't tell what tone of voice I am trying say things in. If I said this to you in real life and showed you the article, then you would obviously know I wasn't being serious.

The reference wasn't to that quote; it was to the lack of punctuation in the title. :-p

And wasnt the irony to this case the fact that by burning hte vehicles, he released more pollutants into the air then the vehicles would have ever produced in all their lifetimes?
