Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the question of whether a black hole can hold an infinite amount of mass. Participants explore theoretical perspectives, observational evidence, and the implications of mass limits in the context of black holes.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that theoretically, there may not be an upper mass limit for black holes, but they express skepticism regarding the existence of such mass in the universe.
  • Others argue that while there is no limit on the mass of a black hole, the concept of a black hole containing infinite mass is unrealistic.
  • A participant references the formation of black holes from the gravitational collapse of objects with at least two solar masses and notes the existence of supermassive black holes in galaxies.
  • One participant humorously suggests that a black hole could hold "only about half that amount" in response to the idea of infinite mass.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the possibility of a black hole holding infinite mass, with multiple competing views presented regarding the theoretical and practical implications.

Contextual Notes

Some statements depend on definitions of mass and the nature of singularities, and there are unresolved assumptions about the physical implications of infinite mass in black holes.

Theoretically, I think so, but I don't think the evidence supports there being that much mass in the universe.

Black holes are believed to form from the gravitational collapse of astronomical objects containing two or more solar masses. Astronomical observations suggest that the centers of most galaxies, including our own Milky Way, contain supermassive black holes containing millions to billions of solar masses.

as jonathan has said theoreticaly there is no upper mass
limit for BH, "if there is i have not seen a referance to it".
however i do not think a BH could contain "infinite mass",
unless it is "the singularity".

There is no limit on the mass of a black hole, but a black hole with infite mass is not even a remotely realistic or possible situation.

No, only about half that amount.
