Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a riddle involving a secret code where numbers represent letters, specifically focusing on what number corresponds to the letter "A." Participants explore various interpretations and methods for decoding the riddle, with a mix of mathematical reasoning and wordplay.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Mathematical reasoning
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the letter "A" could correspond to the number "1," while others express uncertainty about this interpretation.
  • One participant proposes that the answer could be "zero," indicating a different approach to the riddle.
  • Hints are provided that suggest spelling out numbers (e.g., "o-n-e," "t-w-o") may be relevant to finding the answer.
  • Another participant mentions that the phrase "go to ground" may imply something about hiding or being difficult to find, potentially linking it to the riddle's solution.
  • Several participants engage in playful banter, reiterating the riddle's complexity and the challenge it presents.
  • One participant lists numbers sequentially while searching for the letter "A" within their spelled-out forms, suggesting that the answer may lie in this approach.
  • Another participant hints at a connection between the number "101" and the letter "A," but acknowledges that it may not be the correct answer.
  • There is a suggestion that the first occurrence of "A" in the spelled-out numbers could be a focal point for solving the riddle.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on what number represents the letter "A." Multiple competing views and interpretations of the riddle remain, with various proposed answers and methods for decoding.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty regarding the implications of certain phrases and the methods for decoding the riddle. There are unresolved assumptions about how to interpret the hints provided and the relationship between numbers and letters.

Secret codes are often needed
to keep a message hid.

Having numbers stand for letters
was a trick they often did.

So, instead of putting SOS
in letters on a line.

The secret letter writer wrote
1-9-1-5-1-9

But what if it was different
and the numbers went to ground?

If s-i-x is half a dozen
at what number is a found?

I'm not sure I'm right... but could it be "1"? My brain is quite teased... :-/... ok ok.. it's 1.

C'mon people. This is the such a good brain teaser. In the style of that brainteaser we all know and love: The Sphinx. It is definitely solvable,

If you like integer math, the answer is zero.

If you realize that Math isn't always the answer you might come closer to a correct answer

hints:
I can' hide them completely so don't look if you don't have to

during a fox hunt sometimes the fox will "go to ground"
it cannot be found, it hides.

half a dozen is 6.
if s-i-x is the code for half a dozen
maybe you have to spell out the numbers, o-n-e, t-w-o, etc

at what number is A found?? [/color]

After burying my head in the sAnd, I say the answer is:
101 or, o-n-e-h-u-n-d-e-r-e-d-A-n-d-o-n-e
??

right idea wrong number, and is not actually part of the number. if it was I would have learned about it on my twenty and one birthday

what does go to ground mean? does that have to do with the sphinx and the sAnd? like thousand.. i suppose if we go backwards, negAtive-one would be the first with an A in it. I'm not sure what we'r looking for, the first A that comes up in the letters of a number without pretexts?
