Schools How do I choose which graduate school to attend?

Thank you Choppy - I've emailed a faculty member those very questions, and received a very enthusiatic and detailed response a few hours later. To my surprise, a couple of his graduate students ignored my query (it has been around a week since I emailed them).

Schools How do I choose which graduate school to attend?

Thanks Choppy - this is very helpful. Are you also in Pure Math? Because I think it would probably be too ambitious of me to start talking about potential thesis problems right away. I would much rather know, for example, if they plan to stay in the department, or in some cases if they are about...

Schools How do I choose which graduate school to attend?

I have so far been admitted to three graduate programs in pure math. Without being too specific, all three schools are top-40 programs (one of which is also top 20, and another is top 30) - these numbers have been extracted from the NRC and US news rankings for graduate math programs. As I am...

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

What's a good resource to learn about simple closed curves and intersection numbers (geometric and algebraic)? I don't know if this is obvious but I'm looking at this from a surface topological perspective. Thanks.

Series Question: Proving Convergence with Direct Comparison Test

Hi, I have this series \sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\frac{\arcsin{\displaystyle\frac{1}{k}}}{k^2} I intended to prove this by Direct Comparison Test using the inequality: \frac{\arcsin{\displaystyle\frac{1}{k}}}{k^2} \leq \frac{1}{k^2} Can I justify this inequality by saying that...

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

Not according to https://www.amazon.com/dp/0821816462/?tag=pfamazon01-20. It's affordable, too. Out of curiosity, mathwonk, does Jacobson's Basic Algebra introduce categories from the get-go?

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

What does everyone here think of Mac Lane's Algebra? I'm surprised it isn't widely adopted - it develops all required machinery (including categories) from scratch, which perhaps makes for an excellent preparation to Lang. How about everyone else?

Good books to buy for an intro to theoretical physics

Not concerned? I'm not exactly sure I'm familiar with "further math", but I'm guessing multivariable calculus? Can you elaborate on your past math/physics exposure?

Schools Which US University Should I Choose for a PhD in Physics?

BioBen, I am not familar with their Ph.D programs, but you should either aim a bit higher, or look up the faculty at both schools and see if you share any of their research interests. No.

Math Olympiad Corner- CMO,USAMO,IMO, and others

Yes, I gather that you want a book that includes solutions to most problem? If so, Arthur Engel's Problem-Solving Strategies is quite excellent, though it isn't as approchable as Zeitz's book. If you are able to at least answer one question on the USAMO, then by all means get Engel's book...

Putnam questions can be found here (compiled by Valentin of Mathlinks/AoPS). Some of answers can be found here.

I don't think you should be posting any of the problems now; there are sunday test-takers also.

Unless you find an instructor who can get it for you, Wiley will not sell it to you. They are pretty strict in this regard.
