Finding a sample size that would give a certain probability of sucess
hmm, okay, so i looked at the problem again and saw that i can't use the binomial dist, since i an NOT replacing my elements. so i tried to use the hyper geometric, such that: {(k choose 1)(n-k choose m-1)} / (n choose m), and simplifying, got : km(n-k)! / n!(n-k-m-1)! = .90 however...- ascapoccia

Finding a sample size that would give a certain probability of sucess
Homework Statement a population of n people contain k individuals with a disease. a sample of m people without replacement are chosen. how big should m be so that the probability of having at least one person with the disease is approximately .9? find m when n= 1000 and k= 10 hint...- ascapoccia

Why did the warm civilizations decline?
A Farewell to Arms, by Professor Gregory Clark, is another good book to use as a reference for this, along with the Jared Diamond book already mentioned. But, at least among economic historians, it is generally well accepted that agricultural production led to a greater population density and...- ascapoccia

Is the Traditional Keynesian Approach Still Valid in Today's Globalized Economy?
First, some issues with what you wrote. Keynes developed this policies before 1936, and was advocating them before then (for example, his "economic consequences of the peace" held many of the ideas put forth in "the general theory".) Also, the Great Depresion was deepened by the horrible...- ascapoccia

Undergrad Why Does Mathematical Induction Effectively Prove Sequences?
Thank you. I've been wondering about this for a while, and didn't have the heart to ask my professor what seemed should have been a fairly simple deduction.- ascapoccia

What are the Pros and Cons of Free Trade between the US and Canada?
This is usually why economists tend to emphasize free trade, because if you try to use governement policy to dictate the economy, it becomes hijacked by special interest groups, inefficiency, and the major issue of trying to please everyone. Economists, at least in theory, are not politicians...- ascapoccia

Unpredictable inflation and borrowing money
well, that is an oversimplification, but essentially true. inflation does erode debt, but deflation increases the burden of debt, because you would owe more in terms of purchasing power.- ascapoccia

How did Native people purify water
I don't know so much about purification, but I do know that a lot of times, villages were careful about only drinking up stream of where they cleaned and did other things in the water, and were careful not to bury their dead near the rivers. This didn't do much about stuff coming from upstream...- ascapoccia

Undergrad Why Does Mathematical Induction Effectively Prove Sequences?
I know this sounds kind of like a basic question, but why does the method of mathematical indcution work to prove things like sequences and such? All the other proof methods I have learned have made sense to me, and I can prove using logical truth tables or axioms, but I don't really get how...- ascapoccia

Economics resource request: highly inefficient markets
:!) This is one of the best undergraduate texts on microeconomics on the market right now. Much more mathematical than many of them. Unfourtunately, a lot of what I know are journal articles that you need subscription to see. However, if you have access, do a search on JSTOR or Project...- ascapoccia

What are the Pros and Cons of Free Trade between the US and Canada?
JakeA, I see what you are saying now. And I agree with you, we should balance out a little more. But this lack of balancing has less to do with having free trade than with the spending habits of Americans. Also, you must note that whenever a state has a trade surplus, there is, by definition...- ascapoccia

Schools How does one fund graduate school?
Thank you all. University of Washington is pretty good for what I'm going into, so it isn't just a degree mill. I'll look into the options given above (except for the taking a year off thing, because my grades this year haven't been as good as before). :) arigato!- ascapoccia
