Programs Academic advice for math major (peripheral)

It's hard to beat computer science. I worked an internship for a couple of years, and I found that my CS and statistics experience, acquired through classes, was instrumental in both getting the job and performing its duties. They're called REUs, research experiences for undergraduates, and...

News Obama & Chavez: Respect Despite Tensions

Interstate relations are anarchic. Resources are finite; IMO, we don't have the wherewithal to correct every injustice in the world (occasionally hypocritically), and generally speaking, a better policy is to realistically recognize the governments which exist, provided that said governments...

Programs Can I Get into a Physics PhD Program without a Physics Major?

If you've just completed the intro sequence, then the 3.8-9 doesn't mean much. Take the quantum, electrodynamics, and classical mechanics sequences and maintain your GPA.

Schools University of Kentucky math department

Hello: I'm wondering if anyone here (especially any current students) has heard anything about the University of Kentucky math department, particularly about the environment (supportive/nonsupportive, etc).

How to Handle Missing a Physics Test for Grad School

We can't foresee everything. If the power went out, you have an excuse (especially if other people missed the exam). Use it! Talk to the professor - if that doesn't work, talk to the department chair - if that doesn't work, talk to the dean. At worst, they can tell you no. If they each say...

News Will Sarah Palin's political career be limited to Alaska?

No. She has a base that doesn't care how badly she messes things up, McCain doesn't.

Which is more valuable, chemistry or physics?

If you want to be an engineer, why not study engineering? I know several people with majors in both math and a field of engineering. Your personal statement will be more meaningful, your application will be competitive, and you can easily find well paying work should you not go on to grad school.

    Computer science vs. software engineering

Not really. Data structures is fundamentally about how algorithms reflect the underlying data structure, Languages is fundamentally about the capacity of programming languages to express computation.

News How Effective Was Duck and Cover During the Cold War?

To be frank, if a large nuclear war happened, that's exactly where I'd want to be. Let's get it over with ASAP!

    Computer science vs. software engineering

In that case, CS would probably be the best way to go. You can always take a few SE classes on the side. FYI, as a math/CS dual major, I hated the pair of hardware classes I took.

News Here's a Shocker: Gates says Obama more Analytical than Bush

Note that a search of posts made by kyleb with the term 'gates' turns up two posts: the above, along with another post in which he states a preference for Cohen. In neither of these posts does he profer reasons for his statement - so are we to assume kyleb's statement on faith? Otherwise, I...
