Mag 6.4, Triple Point -Juan de Fuca (Gorda), N America, Pacific Plates
https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/video/9.7107713 The 'Explorer Plate' is east of an active ocean ridge, which is pushing out 'new' ocean crust of the north coast of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Earth’s Crust Is Tearing Apart off the Pacific Northwest—and That’s Not Necessarily Bad News...- Astronuc

Graduate Modeling recoil track diffusion modification in aerogels?
A couple of points: 1. 224Ra->220Rn is found in the decay chain of 232Th rather than in the decay chains of 235U or 238U, although 232Th is a decay product of 236U, which does form when 235U undergoes radiative (n,γ) capture rather than fissioning...- Astronuc

Stargazing Meteor/meteorite made a big boom this morning!
I saw some dashcam video this morning. Pretty cool! Apparently NASA reported a 7 ton meteor. From the AP cited by Andy Resnick in the OP: I like the comment: "A 7-ton meteor that sped across the Cleveland sky at 45,000 miles (72,420 kilometers) per hour . . . ."- Astronuc

Why is AuCl4 an anion?
Adding to what others mentioned, Cl is an anion, so one has a cation (Au) surrounded by 3 or 4 Cl atoms. H⋅Au(III)Cl4, has 4 Cl anions surrounding an Au cation. Any one of the 4 Cl atoms can lose an electron such that the complex becomes negative. Something I just learned: "Au(III)Cl4 is used... -

RIP Anthony J Leggett (1938 - 2026), superfluidity
I read about the behavior of 3He, probably around 1975, just one of the many interesting topics that inspired me to study physics and science, in general. I recall that liquid 3He would flow out of a test tube, IIRC, if it was held above a pool of liquid 3He, and it would flow in if the bottom...- Astronuc

High School ASASSN-15lh (aka SN 2015L), a superluminal supernova, or hypernova?
My wife just happened to be listening to a video on Science Channel. It caught my attention, partly due to the mention of killer stars, or death stars, and mostly because if mentioned ASASSN-15lh (which sounded like assassin). I then searched for references, and also search PF for any...- Astronuc

High School ASASSN-15lh (aka SN 2015L), a superluminal supernova, or hypernova?
My wife was listening to a video about superluminal supernova (Type Ic), ASASSN-15lh, or SN 2015L. It was discovered through the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN). The event occurred in a galaxy ~3.82 billion ly from earth. Peak Apparent Magnitude was 16.9. The mass of...- Astronuc

Iceberg A-23A turns blue, starts traveling and may break apart
Apparently, the iceberg A23 has been disintegrating. Once the biggest in the world, it now apparently has weeks left somewhere in the south Atlantic NNW of South Georgia Island. https://www.bbc.com/news/resources/idt-20f878f1-f4af-4022-9f62-b0515b9f4b20- Astronuc

High School Can alpha radiation make other materials radioactive?
I am aware this thread is about 2.5 years old (OP Aug 9, 2023 with last response Sep 28, 2023), but it is a somewhat important topic. Context of the statements by NRC and HPS is important to understand. In the normal course of every day life, one would not expect aluminum foil in contact with...- Astronuc

What causes the asymmetry in a symmetrically developing organism?
I wonder if I changed thought in mid-sentence. As far as I know my abdominal cavity is normal. My b I have dextrocardia, in which my heart is oriented to the right, and actually is more vertical. That has caused confusion for some radiologists and doctors. It affected my lungs as well, when...- Astronuc

ChatGPT Examples, Good and Bad
Good questions. The second quote in my post mentions less success with "impending respiratory failure" without elaborating on the symptoms, but a high success rate for "stroke" cases with "unmistakable" symptoms. So, perhaps it is a matter of training, or 'understanding' (diagnosing) ambiguous...- Astronuc
