Which mathematical subjects must I learn to understand basic QFT?
So I did QFT at university and didn't feel that I really understood what was being done. We just did some calculations, heuristic guesswork and dwelled on phenomenology. I want to do it the way I personally understand things best: by learning the mathematics in detail, almost at the level of a...- camel_jockey

Graduate Good books on stochastic processes?
Hey! Just as the title suggests I am looking for a good book on stochastic processes which isn't just praised because it is used everywhere, but because the students actually find it thorough, crystal-clear and attentive to detail. Hopefully with solved exercises and problems too! Anyone...- camel_jockey

US Colleges: Is the Campus Culture Stifling Intellectual Growth?
The US has a huge variation, the top 40 universities are excellent. Then there are maybe 40 more universities which are "OK"... but thereafter the situation decreases very, very rapidly. I would rather go to a school with poor, stressed out Indian students who work very hard and have high...- camel_jockey

String theory and mathematical physics in Germany
Hey guys! Which research departments are best? I was hoping to get the top 3-4 institutions names. Basically I am into mathematical string theory and geometry/topology-physics in general.- camel_jockey

Considering carreer in finance/banking/market analysis
Well this is terrible news, I didn't know the employment-world would be so irritated with me. But I kinda see how it works now, thanks for taking your time to explain!- camel_jockey

Considering carreer in finance/banking/market analysis
I am not fully surprised, but this is depressing to hear... Why do they do this? Don't most companies have a HR department which takes care of applications? May I ask if there is anything constructive I can do to start inching my way towards an interview (or headhunter) ?? Many thanks for...- camel_jockey

Considering carreer in finance/banking/market analysis
Thanks for your reply! Could you list some of the companies you know of? Do you think they would be interested in someone with a good mathematical training? In what way do you mean that the application for a job of this kind of non-trivial? Do I really have to know people or something like...- camel_jockey

Is there a limit to mathematical progress?
I checked out the wiki article on Gödel 1 & 2... and no I didn't see any consequences for the limitations (or lack thereof) of the extent of mathematics. Where can I find it? Is it in the wikipedia article? Not arguing here, I just want to find it :)- camel_jockey

Is this really true or just a loose extrapolation that somebody has made? I would very much like to see the link! :)- camel_jockey

Considering carreer in finance/banking/market analysis
Hi guys! The other threads I saw on this didn't quite get to my area of interest, which is: How reasonable is it to apply to a company which deals with financial market analysis etc, with a bachelors in science (from a good uni), and a masters in theoretical physics (also from a good uni)...- camel_jockey

Graduate Why the circle can't be homeomorphic to a real interval
So I gather that you mean that the circle is not an open set? How would one motivate this (intuitively I know you are correct of course) ? Does this depend on the topology you CHOOSE, and moreover, does it depend if the circle manifold is chosen to be some SUBSET of R^n ? (we assume that...- camel_jockey

Which is the best book in modern theoretical classical mechanics?
Hi! I am a very mathematically-oriented physicist. Since I never plan in making contact with "dirty" mechanics like robotics, structural problems or force diagrams, I want a book that prepares me for the mathematical/theoretical foundations of mechanics so that I can transition more smoothly to...- camel_jockey

Graduate Why the circle can't be homeomorphic to a real interval
Great scott! Some fine spotting there... I recognize the theorem - isn't it in Munkres? I unfortunately don't have that book. You are probably right but I don't quite understand that the problem would be the antipodal points. Isnt the problem that the continuous function from the...- camel_jockey
