Decrease in the number of physics students
I definitely notice that physics is not a very popular choice, but I can't say whether or not it's declining. After the first two years of general courses, the classes I had were aimed directly toward physics students. The average class size was five students. (I was studying in a small, ~6000...- Caper

Lottery with two options for the prize HELP
Oh i see what shmoe was saying, maybe instead of calculating the PV of option A you should calculate FV of both after 25 years? it's been a few years since I took economics and I got rid of the textbook or I'd plug the numbers in and see if it gives a different answer. If option A is indeed...- Caper

Lottery with two options for the prize HELP
The value aisha calculated, $613,660, is how much you would get from option 1, which is $1000 per week for life, and you live for 25 years. The second option is $600,000 immediately. You could invest that, at 7% interest and get far more than $613,660. When aisha did the calculations they...- Caper

Lottery with two options for the prize HELP
The lump sum prize of $600,00 could also be invested, making it the better paying option.- Caper

Graduate How are room temperature photons produced?
"Thermal emission of radiation occurs when an electron makes different quantum transitions between various energy levels in molecules..." How is this so different from how photons are produced?- Caper

Undergrad Why don't neutral particles leave tracks in the bubble chamber?
The particles aren't observed by what they ionize, they are observed by the bubble trail they leave behind as they pass through. The reason they need to have a charge is so the magnetic field affects them and they take on a spiral path, or else they go in a straight line and you get no useful...- Caper

Can someone help me find the equivalent resistance
One problem I see with your calculations is you took R1 and R2 in series, but R2 is in series with R3//R4 R1 will be one of the last ones you can reduce- Caper

How Do You Calculate Current in R1 Using Kirchhoff's Rules?
What you have there is two loops. Using Kirchoff's laws you know the sum of the voltages in both loops will be zero. To start you can look at each loop individually, assume there is a current flowing clockwise in both loops. Call the current in loop one I1 and the current in loop 2 I2. Now go...- Caper

Graduate Photon Interactions: 4 Cases & Conditions
There are yellow lasers, here's a link to a website selling yellow laser pointers and how they're made http://www.blueskymarketing.co.uk/laser_pointer/yellow_laser_pointer.htm As for creating monochromatic light, not sure how they did it in the 1800's, but I guess one way would be to use...- Caper

Building a Human-Powered Boat for Physics Class
You can probably find every type of human powered boat ever made here: http://www.humanpoweredboats.com/ It's not too technical, but should give you plenty of ideas. There's tons of links to some more technical stuff too.- Caper

Is a Potato Gun Project Safe for Physics Experiments?
Do you really think you need a $140 igniter? The potato gun I helped build before only used a $3 barbeque lighter and it worked fine.- Caper

Why laser light is mono chromatic
I don't know how much you know about the subject already so I will try to keep it simple. Photons that are given off in a laser are caused by electrons going from a high energy level to a lower energy level. The photons that are given off have a wavelength determined by the amount of energy...- Caper

Best Circuit Simulation Software: Ease of Use and Flexibility?
The one I use the most is Multisim. It's pretty easy to learn, but I haven't had much experience with other programs so I don't know how it compares.- Caper
