References for Design Engineers (Must Haves)
One of my favourite book for mechanical design is "A text book of machine design" by R.S. Khurmi & J.K. Gupta. Especially the approaches for calculating bolt connection with various examples are very userful.- cherish

Minimum screw thread engagement to support weight?
Just checked for an example of thread M20x2.5 & thread engagement depth 20mm, axial force 100 kN, approach in post #6 has equivalent stress 158 MPa while beam theory is 189 MPa, about 20% higher.- cherish

Minimum screw thread engagement to support weight?
Thanks @Lnewqban, I found a picture and a case study on the "beam theory": https://www.researchgate.net/publication/285462605_Loading_and_Contact_Stress_Analysis_on_the_Thread_Teeth_in_Tubing_and_Casing_Premium_Threaded_Connection/link/618bfe4107be5f31b76386eb/download But not find reference...- cherish

Minimum screw thread engagement to support weight?
Hi @Baluncore, Does the area you mentioned is used for calculating the surface contact pressure of the mating area between threads? One of the approach I have seen is checking the thread using beam theory. Then we check equivalent stresss of the thread which includes shear & bending. I will...- cherish

Why Do Spur Gear Pairs Have Different Face Widths?
Hi lnewqban, I got a picture from Honda that looks a bit different, maybe it varies from manufacturers, or the illustration will not be an exact like between 12mm and 13mm- cherish

Why Do Spur Gear Pairs Have Different Face Widths?
Dear all, I am very appreciated with all of your guidance and especially comment from Baluncore are very clear for me now. I have came back to the guy who made that statement to get more clarify and he assumed the noise might come out during rotation without carrying load (the one he...- cherish

Why Do Spur Gear Pairs Have Different Face Widths?
Dear Physicsforum Mentors, For a pinion and gear wheel, the face width instead of 12mm for both, it should be 14mm and 12mm. The explanation I got is, when there's 0.2mm deviation in axial, then only 11.8mm width will be in meshing. later, when the system be worn out, that 0.2mm will be in...- cherish

Assemble shrink fit with a big shaft ∅203 mm?
Hi everyone, @Chronos: this is the free end of a winch drum then a keyway maybe not used, and the cylindricity as well as perpendicularity tolerances are 0.1 mm, both material grades are equivalent to EH36. @Q_Goest: You're absolutely right, at the first time we did not carry out...- cherish

Assemble shrink fit with a big shaft ∅203 mm?
Assemble "shrink fit" with a big shaft ∅203 mm? Dear all, Just a short question that is it possible to contract the shaft in liquid nitrogen and heat up the hub around 300°C so that we can assemble them together quickly? We are delivering a prototype to our customer with a tight requirement...- cherish

Using 2 bolts M12 or 4 bolts M6?
hi Studiot, certainly this's not coursework, just a small problem that i design it for a gearbox. First time i try to use 4 M6 as mentioned above & my boss agreed with solution but later i found a guide from catalogue they using 2 M12 in stead as picture attached, just a bit wondering that the...- cherish

Using 2 bolts M12 or 4 bolts M6?
Hi there, I'm not sure that using the same type of 2 bolts M12x1.5 (L=30mm) or 4 bolts M6x1 (L=25mm) & place equidistant in a circle as picture below, which can bear force better & why? Thanks many in advanced! [PLAIN]http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7971/123ok.jpg- cherish
