Assuming Complex Shape a Simple Shape. What is this called?

What topic in mathematics would something fall under if you assumed a complex shape to be a more simple shape? Such as assuming a recliner is actually a cube, or a tree it actually a cone or prism, or a tire is actually a cylinder? Would this be topology, or something else? Simple geometry?

How can I solve this exponential equation with variables in the exponent?

I wasn't so much concerned with doing the answer on the calculator, as to figuring out how the calculator arrived at that answer. I wanted to know the process behind it, which was arrived at with Netwon's Method. Thank you for the post, though.

How can I solve this exponential equation with variables in the exponent?

It was actually a formatting error in my entry into the calculator. Thank you, though.

How can I solve this exponential equation with variables in the exponent?

Derp. That was it. It was my calculator. Thank you! Then, I was doing it right all along. I just popped the corrected answer into each of those and came out with the proper answer. :)

How can I solve this exponential equation with variables in the exponent?

    I have been trying to solve this all day on paper, going through step-by-step, but I am obviously doing it wrong. f(x) = 2^x + 3^x - 50 f'(x) = 2^x \log(2) + 3^x \log(3) x_0 = 3 x_{n+1} = x_0 - \frac{f(x_0)}{f'(x_0)} x_1 = 3 - \frac{2^3 + 3^3 - 50}{2^3 \log(2) + 3^3 \log(3)} \approx...

How can I solve this exponential equation with variables in the exponent?

Hello. This problem was presented to me and I can't figure out for the life of me how to solve it. 2^x + 3^x = 50 I know the answer is approximately 3.35, thanks to WolframAlpha, but I don't know of any steps to arrive at this. ln(2^x + 3^x) = ln(50) How do you solve for ln(a+b) in...

Chemical Engineering Grad with Physics undergrad?

Thank you for answering my question the second time around. You seem to be under the assumption that I haven't taken chemistry labs, which is far from the case. As per grades, research, recommendations, and what have you; if I didn't have those as it were, I wouldn't even consider this. My GPA...

Chemical Engineering Grad with Physics undergrad?

The reason I say "generalize" is because all graduate programs for a certain subject have SOME kind of "base-line" of classes that needs to be completed with undergraduate studies. As far as "stellar work/research experience," are you trying to come off as condescending or something? If you are...

Chemical Engineering Grad with Physics undergrad?

Hello. I am currently a physics major attending a university where there is no true engineering degree. I was wondering if one who is pursuing a degree in physics would even have a chance of getting into a program involved with chemical engineering. To me, it seems the further along, physics and...

    Question on branch of engineering

Good, this is what I was thinking, too. Some machines are far too complex for anyone thing to be it wholey. It takes a team doing these sorts of things. Thank you for your insight.

    Question on branch of engineering

This may be a strange question, but humor it if you would. I have perhaps watched one too many science fiction shows, but I digress. If one wanted to get into a field, say, involving cyborgs or some such, what would that be? What if one wanted to put a brain or transfer consciousness into a...
