Graduate How do constraints affect the Hamiltonian in mean-field approximation?
Thanks for the reply. So the next usual step is to go to Fourier space, so my Hamiltonian and chemical potential becomes something like H = \sum_k [-2t\cos ka + (\epsilon_k - \mu_k)]c_k^\dagger c_k + \alpha\mu_{k=0}, where we had the constraint c^\dagger_i c_i - \alpha. Wouldn't the 2nd...- CKtalon

Graduate How do constraints affect the Hamiltonian in mean-field approximation?
Please correct me if I make any mistakes along the way. Suppose we have a simple tight-binding Hamiltonian H=\sum_i \epsilon _i c_i^\dagger c_i - t\sum_{\langle i j\rangle} c_i^\dagger c_j + h.c., In half-filling systems, we tend to impose a constraint such that each site has only one...- CKtalon

Graduate N-point Green's function in QFT
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but when we renormalize the coupling constant, don't you need to calculate the 4point function? And in calculating the S matrix, you can get some N point function, which has to be reduced to 2 point functions using Wick's contraction, but with all sorts of...- CKtalon

How necessary is upper level E&M for QM
The concept of using orthogonality in solving the Laplace equation through Fourier Series, etc might be useful when you study QM. Orthogonality is used much more in QM than EM though.- CKtalon

Courses Physics/Math Course Diagram; Opinions please?
I see that you are from UIUC ;) Isn't PHYS 325 (Classical Mechanics) usually taken concurrently with PHYS 213 (thermal) and 214 (quantum) and MATH 285 (Diff Eq)? I believe that is definitely a course load that is easily undertaken.. MATH 415 shouldn't be much of a problem..but I'm not sure...- CKtalon
