What kind of tools do physicists use?

Building an experiment piece, taking apart lab equipment if something breaks, etc. You aren't just going to sit in an office crunching numbers. You will have your sleeves rolled up in a lab. There is a certain amount of grunt work that has to be done before you can start collecting data. The...

Engineering Do electrical engineers only work with circuits?

The best way to know what EE's do is to try to shadow one. Just look around your area at companies or even the electric company for your area and send a couple emails. Most engineers will be more than willing to show students what they do.

Engineering Do electrical engineers only work with circuits?

"Challenging" and "complex" isn't really quantifiable. What is challenging and complex to some, are basic and intuitive to others. The biggest hiccup for me, at least, was the math can get hairy. If you are working for, say Boeing in there R&D department in St. Louis, you will see some highly...

Is GPA the Only Measure of Success in Engineering School?

I would say it is a school with high caliber, dedicated students. The example student you mentioned is clearly focusing all his/her energy in his/her studies, and doing what they can to stay in school (the reason for the part time job).

Can You Create a Plasma Chamber at Home?

If you have access to a welding machine, the welding arc is basically a plasma.

What steps can I take to jumpstart my career in CFD?

Saladsamurai asked a very good question, and one I have been wanting to ask. I want for a company that designs and manufactures welding fume extractors and I have become very interested in how to model a.) the fumes being generated, and b.) how to model how the fumes are traveling through the...

    How to calculate pad deformation

As Studiot has pointed out, what you are looking for is in that link. No, it doesn't go line by line on the derivation, but you should be able to work backwards to see where it came from. Read through that link again, all pages, and if you still don't understand, come bak and ask.

Suggestions on acing Fluid Mechanics please

Exactly WannaBeME! A lot of problems in fluids aren't straight forward, imo. Understanding what the question is asking, and as MrMatt2532 pointed out, knowing the physics will be extremely helpful. For me, fluids was one of my most challenging course, and everything that has been laid out so...

Suggestions on acing Fluid Mechanics please

Know the material, know the examples, annoy the prof with questions when you don't understand something, form a study group. If you have to refer to the solution manual, try to understand what is going on in the answer, don't just write it down!

Engineering Is Aerospace Engineering for me?

If you are not interested in physics and/or math, get out of aerospace engineering. That's not saying you could never work in the aerospace field. There is always things on the business side of things (sales and marketing, management, etc). That might be were you will be better suited.

Do you ever talk to girls who rejected you?

I would just say "hey", yes. Don't go out of your way to talk to her. If she talks to you, be polite and talk with her, but keep it short. I was the same as you at that age. I never once had a date in high school, and it did get depressing. Have I since talked to girls that have rejected...

Is Bill Nye the Science Guy's Wacky Persona Damaging Kids' Interest in Science?

I agree with antifreeze. We watched Bill Nye in elementary school, probably around grades 3 and 4. Of course it had the normal "we are going to watch this video and do this work sheet as you watch it" kind of assignment. I always enjoyed them at that age. Of course when I got older and...

Do you ever talk to girls who rejected you?

You are 17. At that age girls come and go. It's something you learn when you are a few years older. Yes it hurts that she rejected you, but I honestly wouldn't continue trying going after her. If you two happen to cross paths in the near future, just give a casual hello. It will just cause...

Is Bill Nye the Science Guy's Wacky Persona Damaging Kids' Interest in Science?

When I was going up, we watched a lot of Bill Nye videos, both the PBS episodes as well as the ABC/Disney episodes. Another similar show was Beckman's World. These are what got me interested in science. I can even vaguely remember Newton's Apple. One more show was Science Court on Saturday...

Engineering Aerospace Engineering outlook (also security clearance question)

Sorry to hijack, but I am in a similar situation. I too got in trouble in my early twenty's. A DWI to be specific. Employment is something that concerns me. I was like to get a security clearance and was wondering what effect that would have.
