Sherlock Holmes Movie Night: Mystery & Notes!
I must say it wasn't as good as I was hoping it to be, but I was entertained enough. What I always say about movies is that if you're looking for intellectual stimulation, go read a book. Movies are for ENTERTAINMENT. Not historical accuracy or enlightenment or anything like that - something...- -DB

Recommend me Physics/Philosophy Books?
Crimes Against Logic - Jamie Whyte It's a short and easy read, but I think it has a very important message that everyone should at least consider..- -DB

What to do with my horrible GPA?
If you actually get back on track and do well from here on out, I don't think you should have any problem at all. As for research... DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT! Go to a professor and ASK, don't be shy! The absolute worst thing that could happen is that the professor doesn't let you work on their...- -DB

Indian with 22 MA degrees, 5 PhDs, and 3 D.Lits
Doesn't the fact that he earned those graduate degrees imply that he HAS contributed new work to those fields and mastered them? I think the whole reason why someone wrote an article about him is that it is UNUSUAL for someone to dedicate their whole life to just constantly pursue degrees; he...- -DB

What do youse guys think of MythBusters
Scientifically and logically, I would say about 60 to 70 percent of their conclusions are flawed. It's a TV show. It's successful because it's ENTERTAINING. They blow-up/break/smash stuff all the time, that's why people watch it. Still, I think it is kind of cool to see a show at least...- -DB

Orbital Concepts: Is the p-Orbital Node At the Nucleus?
Not s orbitals. A node is where the wave equation changes sign. When you have 1 node, you have at least 2 lobes. -

Help with Article: Life as we don't know it.
I feel I should point out a flaw in the idea of silicon based life. The reason why life as we do know it is "carbon based" is because of carbon's exceptional ability to catenate (i.e. to make long chains with itself). This is how large organic molecules can form with ease. For example, the... -

Engineering Which Engineer Actually Uses the Most Math?
I just recently graduated college and I'm probably going to graduate school next Fall, so I don't have too much "real world" experience, but from what I noticed is that it seems that the field of engineering is more business than mathematics and physics - something that universities seem to fall...- -DB

Schools Switching programs in graduate school.
I've recently finished applying to a few doctoral programs in chemistry for next fall, but I am now thinking that maybe I should have looked into chemical engineering instead. I'm just getting a feeling that chemical engineering would be a bit more interesting and that there might be more job...- -DB

Physics Does a career in physics make sense for me?
Ditto. I minored in math while I was an undergraduate - a fact that I keep to myself. I've been in so many situations where someone was trying to do some mental math in their head and then looked at me and was like "hey, you did a lot of math in college! What's one third of 3/5 minus 1/2?" or...- -DB

Job Skills Engineering at a Colorado or California University?
As far as I know, it just depends on which schools you're comparing. Just because Cali has a lot of top notch schools doesn't mean that EVERY school in the state is better than all the other ones elsewhere. Which schools are you considering?- -DB

Scientist Career Path: Is It Pessimistic or Real?
The first two thirds of the essay just sounded like a bunch of cynical BS, but in the last third I think I picked up something else. He basically points out near the end that the problem is that grad schools are training more phDs than there are jobs for it. I get the feeling that the author...- -DB

How Can a 16-Year-Old Explore a Passion for Physics and Engineering?
From your original post, it sounds like you might be aiming for something like mechanical engineering. Just remember you can go really far with any degree if you're willing to be open minded about it. And if you're really gung-ho about the whole process, your concern about not becoming adept...- -DB
