Why colonize Mars and not the Moon?

I probably took your words too literal but everything costs something. No matter where, on Earth, Mars or the Moon, an initial investment is required to set up the place/farm etc. The costs for the setup of a colony on the Moon or Mars will be ( 6 or 7) magnitudes higher than those on Earth...

Why colonize Mars and not the Moon?

Last time i checked food, water, plants and animals weren't free. Everything you want, you'll have to pay for, even on Earth. I could even argue that oxygen isn't completely free on Earth. I agree that the bootstrap process of establishing a colony on Mars (or the Moon) would be a very slow (as...

Why colonize Mars and not the Moon?

The largest was 5 megatons, buried at 5,875 feet. The second question is irrelevant. It isn't inconceivable to imagine a nuclear device with an exploding force exceeding 40 to 100 times as large. As the gravity pull of Deimos is so small, it's very probable that Deimos would be shattered into a...

B Is the Earth in its original orbit?

The question in the title isn't well defined as "original orbit"? can mean anything. The answer depends completely on the interpretation of the reader of those words. But let's put that aside as you explained what you really meant in your post. The analogy in your post is understandable but it...

Determining the location of a signal using only 2 receivers

Thank you for the reply, RUber and DEvens. First of all, nothing is known about the signal a priori, except that it propagates with the speed of light and it's not blocked by matter what so ever. Secondly, i realize I've been looking at it in a two dimensional way applied on a three dimensional...

Determining the location of a signal using only 2 receivers

I'm currently writing a book. In the book the main characters need to find the source of a signal but they can only use two primitive, non-directional receivers. I think it is possible to calculate the location providing they have access to a very accurate timebase which will tell them the time...

Is there a theoretical min. size/mass limit to a black hole?

It has been said that every answered question raises tem new questions. Well, it's happening to me because now i wonder: Is the detected gamma ray background unique for those x-ray explosions, in other words, are there no other processes which could emit that same radiation? One would expect...

Is there a theoretical min. size/mass limit to a black hole?

Can you elaborate somewhat, please? How did they arrive at the number of one primordial black hole to every 4 cubic lightyears? And is the dispersement uniform?

Is there a theoretical min. size/mass limit to a black hole?

Thank you all. I've been reading up on several subjects mentioned here, such as Planck mass, Planck distance and Planck time. My question in itself has been answered but at the same time a lot of new questions were raised. A truly humbling experience.

    Polynomial system of 6 variables

    I stand corrected.

    Polynomial system of 6 variables

Unless I'm mistaken, there are 12 variables and not 6 which means the system cannot be solved.

Is there a theoretical min. size/mass limit to a black hole?

Normally a star with a mass several times that of the sun will become a black hole at the end of the lifetime of that star. Can black holes exist with a mass much smaller than that exist? In other words, are black holes with a mass of Jupiter or even Earth exist? Or even much smaller than that...
