A peer-review system for the ArXiv?
Students should care a great deal. Those costs get passed down in the form of increased tuition. If the subscription fees are exorbitant, why not try to reduce costs, in today's day and age? When was the last time anyone photocopied an article out of a journal (as opposed to printing online...- dotman

Programs Is it possible to obtain 2 MSc degrees?
Michael Griffin, NASA administrator under the last administration, held multiple degrees, including I think 4 or 5 masters degrees. Learning can be lifelong; at any rate, holding multiple degrees certainly didn't hold him back in any way. I'm sure the opposite was true.- dotman

Is going to lecture a huge waste of time?
The thing is, they're not mutually exclusive. You can read the textbook and go to class. You would literally have to get nothing out of it for it not to be worth your while. And since it gives you a chance to engage with a knowledgeable person on the subject, I don't see how you can get...- dotman

Schools University calculus course self study in five weeks
Wow... no offense, and maybe this works for you, but I think this is a terrible approach. Read the text, work the examples, work the problems, Understand.- dotman

Is Physics the Right Path for Me?
Absolutely. Draw a picture. If you're not drawing a picture, you're doing it wrong if you're having trouble. I can't think of a prof who didn't recommend drawing a picture immediately. Drawing a picture helps you visualize the problem, which helps you determine which equations to use and...- dotman

Physics Is physics the key to unlimited career opportunities?
If you're asking whether a physics degree gives you an unfair advantage over other applicants when it comes time to get a job... let me see if they have a smiley for this... Think the other way around.- dotman

Programs Masters degree in Comp. Sci with a physics bachelor's?
Well, I don't think you'll be able to get accepted with your background (or if you are, you're going to be looking at -a lot- of makeup undergrad classes). Fortunately you don't really need a masters to get started in programming. My advice would be to learn a language or two (Java maybe...- dotman

Engineering Is it worth it to go get HVAC/R training after graduating engineering college?
You may want to look into possibly working for a controls contractor, perhaps as a controls engineer. This is not an 'official' engineering position for which you need to be licensed, you design the control system for a building based on the design engineer's specifications, using your...- dotman

News What would probably be the most impactful steps to stop seal bashing?
Being hit in the head with a club is not a swift death. But you're missing the point. They don't hit the seals in the head to kill them. They hit them in the head to stun them enough that the seals don't squirm around while they skin them. Alive. It's a brutal practice, and should be stopped.- dotman

News What would probably be the most impactful steps to stop seal bashing?
I don't think anyone in this thread actually advocates clubbing to death a month old seal. If they do, they haven't said so explicitly. I think they are just arguing for the sake of arguing. This thread was locked; it should be again. No one is offering useful advice to the OP at this point.- dotman

News What would probably be the most impactful steps to stop seal bashing?
You think clubbing seals is right? This is an actual question. Do you think clubbing seals is right? Answer this, yes or no. My answer is no. I state that explicitly. As far as me not getting possible viewpoints, I get that. But in this conversation, I am the only one who has given...- dotman

News What would probably be the most impactful steps to stop seal bashing?
I'm not going to argue with you about whether clubbing baby seals is wrong or not. I think you might argue with me here about it, because the anonymity of the internet means you don't actually have to look someone in the eye and say, 'Yes, I support clubbing baby seals to death.' But I doubt...- dotman

News What would probably be the most impactful steps to stop seal bashing?
I'm sure this is exactly how seal-clubbers see themselves; as stewards of nature. And I'm certain they're doing it to take care of our natural resources. Not for, oh, I don't know... the money. Cut me a break. Go ask any five year old. It wasn't an analogy. It was a question. Would...- dotman

News What would probably be the most impactful steps to stop seal bashing?
Clubbing an animal to death is inhumane and should be stopped. Clubbing a juevenile animal is even worse. Would you take your dog into be 'put to sleep', if you knew that the method used was clubbing? They club the animals because the animals aren't able to defend themselves. It is...- dotman
