QM Measurements - probability, expectation value

    Urgh sorry, yes I meant for a measurement of L_z... Late night :frown: And yes, I meant 0, \pm\hbar. Right, I think they're \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \\ 0\end{pmatrix} for \lambda=\hbar, \frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}\begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \\ 1\end{pmatrix} for \lambda=0, and \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \\...

QM Measurements - probability, expectation value

Homework Statement What are the possible results and their probabilities for a system with l=1 in the angular momentum state u = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}(1 1 0)? What is the expectation value? ((1 1 0) is a vertical matrix but I can't see how to format that) Homework Equations The...

    Integrating x^4e^(-x^2/a^2) with Gamma Coefficient

Oh, do I use the substitution u = x2? Edit: Just did it this way, I have an answer now! Which is more that I've had for a long while... though apparently it's wrong. On integrating x4e-x2 I got 3π1/2/4. Though when I put the 1/a2 term in the exponential I ended up with a43π1/2/4. Which is...

    Integrating x^4e^(-x^2/a^2) with Gamma Coefficient

Thanks  I had a go at it this way earlier by setting u = x4 and dv = e-x2 but that ended pretty quickly as v = ∫-∞∞ e-x2 dx = π1/2... right?

    Integrating x^4e^(-x^2/a^2) with Gamma Coefficient

Homework Statement \gamma\int\frac{1}{a\sqrt{\pi}}e^{\frac{-x^{2}}{a^{2}}}x^{4}dx There should be a gamma coefficient. I've put it in using latex but it doesn't seem to be showing in the preview... Homework Equations ? The Attempt at a Solution I know that the answer is (3/4)*gamma*a^4 (I...
