Undergrad Finding Sum/Diff. Formulas: Quadratic to Higher Exponents
I understand that you can take the formula and work it backwards to find the middle terms. But what if you don't have the formula? Someone had to find the formula, so how did they find it? Forgive me if I'm being obtuse, but what mathematical process is used to get from a^3 - b^3 to...- EProph

Undergrad Finding Sum/Diff. Formulas: Quadratic to Higher Exponents
For the difference of two squares you can factor using: a^2 - b^2 = (a + b)(a - b). And for the sum and difference of two cubes: a^3 + b^3 = (a+b)(a^2 - ab + b^2) a^3 - b^3 = (a-b)(a^2 + ab + b^2) How are these formulas found...? Can it be done with basic algebra (am I missing something...- EProph

Is My Simplified Answer Correct for Solving R = 3(a + b) for b?
This might be a dumb question, but in my Algebra book, for the problem: Solve R = 3(a + b) for b I came up with: \frac{R}{3} - a = b The book has the answer listed as: \frac{R-3a}{3} = b Which one is simplified? The book tells us to always give your answers in simplified form. To me...- EProph

Radon: A Real Threat or Just Hype?
I remember seeing a lot about this back in the eighties. Then it sort of "went away", I hadn't heard much about it at all over the last 15 or so years. Then today, while watching TV, I saw a commercial for home Radon testing. Just curious, is this a real, serious threat? Or just hype...- EProph

High School Quick set builder notation question
Thanks, this makes sense. I see the diffence now. 1 and 3 both result in the same set, but they build it in different ways. -EP- EProph

High School Quick set builder notation question
I've seen a lot of variety in the way different books/people use set builder notation. Is their any "standard"? For example, I've seen: {x | x < -2 or x > 2 } And somtimes: {x | x < -2 [FONT=Arial Black]U x > 2 } And also: {x | x < -2 } [FONT=Arial Black]U {x | x > 2} Is anyone of...- EProph

What is the true definition of love?
Been in love once, and I still am (still married to her too!) :!) Love, for me, boils down to 3 pretty simple things: 1. I care more about her than life itself. 2. I want to share all of life's most intimate moments with her. 3. She gives my life more meaning than my life has by itself...- EProph

Order Chemistry Supplies: Home Lab Set-up Help
Does anyone know of a good website for ordering chemistry supplies? Things like beakers, tubes, burners, etc., including various chemicals. I'd like to set up a small "home lab" to aid my self-study but I have no idea where to go for these supplies. Thanks! EP -

Late Starter looking for advice
Wow, small world. 2E1x1 here too. The first half of tech school was at Lackland (electronics part), second half was at Ft. Gordon (comm part). I finished up tech school around May of 1997 IIRC. I think Maj Bohon was the detachment commander at the time. I'm blanking on most of the MTL's names...- EProph

Thank you for the words of wisdom edtman. This is refreshing to hear. It seemed like all the people asking for career advice in here were still in high school, so it sort of scared me. BTW, I was in the Air Force too. As a Satellite Communications Tech. Thanks again  EP- EProph

Late Starter looking for advice
I'm 26, and depending on how things go I'll be entering college either this year or next, when I'm 27 or 28 respectively. I'm thrilled to be going to college as this is something I've wanted to do since I was 18 but have only just now been able to accomplish (due to financial problems...- EProph

Undergrad Why do objects take on different color tones when placed near each other?
I never thought of it that way. Makes perfect sense though. I guess I had just assumed (incorrectly) that all of a particular color was being absorbed. Thanks! EP -

Undergrad Why do objects take on different color tones when placed near each other?
Forgive me if this is a dumb question but, I know that when I see an object's "color" I'm really just seeing the wavelengths of light that weren't absorbed by that object's surface (right?). Why then do some colored objects (matte objects, not glossy objects) take on the different color...
