    Solving a Differential Equation Conflict

    You are solving dy/dx + y = x which is wrong since the original equation is dy/dx = x + y, or dy/dx - y = x so now u(x) = e^(-x) and so on and it works out. And yes, the answer is y = 2e^x - x - 1

What Do I Need to Know for Calculus 2?

If I was in your situation I would continue where the class left off and check the course description to see what Calculus 2 is supposed to cover. A solutions manual to your book, if available and if you don't have one, is probably a great idea also. Goodluck and have fun:)

Studying for PDEs: Advice & Strategies

I happen to also be studying PDE's currently. This is how I study. I read the book, sometimes rereading certain parts several times, and do the homework problems. I also work through all the proofs in the book, and so far, it's working. When I get stuck, I try harder and reference different...

Good Analysis text book with solutions?

Here you go, it's paperback though and pricey, but it has plenty of worked out proofs.

Exploring the Differences between Advanced Calculus and Introduction to Analysis

Depends on the school as the others have said. At my school Advanced Calculus is an intro to analysis course. Although currently we are studying things in R^n, convergence, compact sets, continuity, connected sets, metric spaces, etc. This is what is typically covered in an intro to analysis II...

My Journal of Basic Concepts of Mathematics

I think a journal is a good idea. It will reinforce what you learn. Is there a post that discusses how to create mathematical symbols like that? I ran a search and could not find one.

Math Project Ideas for Summer Scholarship | Field Theory Topic Search

Since nobody has replied here are a few unsolved problems. Now the chance of solving one is really slim I imagine but it might give you ideas. Mathworld has lots of other different things also. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/topics/UnsolvedProblems.html Here is one that I thought was...

Is it better to withdraw from a class for a better GPA in the long run?

Thanks for the all replies. Poop-Loops - You only get one shot at things in life most of the time. People who do really well usually work really hard. You can't hate someone for working hard and you can't hate someone for doing poorly, it's their choice. Thomas Edison puts it best when he says...

Is it better to withdraw from a class for a better GPA in the long run?

Thank you for the words of encouragement! I will stick it out until the very last day to withdraw and withdraw only if I feel I am doing bad. We should have a test before the last day to withdraw also so I should know how I am doing. This is my courseload. Linear Algebra - Introductory...

Is it better to withdraw from a class for a better GPA in the long run?

Nothing is disastrous about it, it just bothers me because I know I can ace the course if I had the time to study for it. I worry that I won't have the time to give it the 100% attention it deserves like I do for every course I take.

Is it better to withdraw from a class for a better GPA in the long run?

I am mathematics major and I am considering withdrawing from 1 course this semester. My concern is how does having a Withdrawal on my transcripts look to graduate schools? I plan to go to graduate school for mathematics when I am done with my degree. I could stay in the course but I would...

Is 'Number Theory with Computer Applications' a Recommended Book for Beginners?

An easy to read book is Elementary Introduction to Number Theory by Calvin Long. It's a small book at only 124 pages. My version was printed in 1965 but there are newer ones available online. I've only read the first 3 of the 6 chapters but I think it is really good so far. This book is really...

Career Advice for 27-Year-Old: Finding a Fulfilling Path in Mathematics

LOL:) Well with a bachelors in mathematics, from what I have researched, there are not that many job opportunities. But I think you will find it comforting to know that most mathematics phd programs offer free tuition, free books, and provide a small salary that you can live off while...

Career Advice for 27-Year-Old: Finding a Fulfilling Path in Mathematics

Look at this way. You are going to be 30-something years old no matter what happens. So you can be 30-something and have a degree, or be 30-something and not have a degree. The choice is yours. Oh and since you are studying mathematics I would recommend going to graduate school. There are...

    Proof mathematics subjects at University

You should be comfortable proving things different ways. Here are three different ways to prove the same thing that you will find extremely useful I think. I'll try to explain them as best as I can. A good book would be better of course! Prove that if x is an even integer then x + 9 is odd...
