Undergrad Longitudinal resistivity in Integer Quantum Hall Effect
Thanks a lot for your reply. I understand the "landau levels being the filled energy bands" part, it's just that no correlation between the Chern number and the Landau levels that are filled was discussed, and reading through that, i would infer that each landau level (/filled band) contributes...- explainplease

Graduate What Causes the Plateaus and Zeros in the Quantum Hall Effect?
I will only answer your question about the integer quantum Hall effect because that's what I have knowledge about: So to understand how disorder gives rise to plateau, you need to understand what disorder does first. So disorder (impurities) introduce add a random potential term, we require...- explainplease

Undergrad Longitudinal resistivity in Integer Quantum Hall Effect
I have studied the integer quantum hall effect mainly from David Tong's notes and i understand how the ## \rho_{xy}## is quantized in terms of the chern number. What I don't understand is - how the chern numbers relate to the number of filled Landau levels though. - I also don't understand the...- explainplease

I trust the math, I just didn't get how this is physically consistent with my knowledge about what the lowering operator does.- explainplease

Graduate Ground-state energy of harmonic oscillator(operator method)
When it comes to potential energy, it is defined up to a constant, and it only makes sense to talk about the potential energy with reference to another point, but the Hamiltonian shouldn't be the same way, after all, isn't the state of a particle defined by its energy? (no degenerate states) ...- explainplease

Graduate Ground-state energy of harmonic oscillator(operator method)
I studied this from Griffith Chapter 2, with the algebraic (raising and lowering operator) method, we reached the ground state by setting a_Ψ0 = 0 , then we got what the ground state is, and then plugged it in the Schrödinger equation to know the energy, and it turned out to be 0.5 ħω. My...- explainplease

Undergrad Why do we consider induction a way of charging?
so if i didn't cut the object, then i haven't charged it because the net charge would remain zero right? Thank you :)- explainplease

Undergrad Why do we consider induction a way of charging?
I get that by getting a charged object near an uncharged one, charges of the opposite sign are induced on the surface, but, since the total charge of the whole object is still zero (because electrons move inside the conductor and can't escape because surroundings insulate it) , the object as a...- explainplease
