What exactly is mathematical research?
I am a high school senior now and I would love to pursue a career in math. I have been doing some research on the track from undergrad to grad school to tenure, and there's one thing I don't quite understand: research. I understand what research might be for life sciences or social...- ezperkins

What's the perfect math tattoo for me?
I've been thinking of getting a math-related tattoo, and I decided to go ahead with it, but I'm not sure what it should be. Maybe a small Euler spiral on my wrist? My mother thinks I should get the rational version of the golden ratio, but I think that'd just be lame. Thoughts please?- ezperkins

Calculating the magnitude of point charges
I did that for another problem that asked for the respective components, why is it necessary that I so that for this problem?- ezperkins

Calculating the magnitude of point charges
Homework Statement A point charge of -6 µC is located at x = 1 m, y = -2 m. A second point charge of 12 µC is located at x = 1 m, y = 3 m. (a) Find the magnitude and direction of the electric field at x = -1 m, y = 0. (b) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the force on an...- ezperkins

Using Euler's Formula to Evaluate Complex Numbers in Rectangular Form
haha thanks, I have a habit of making dumb mistakes like that. I'm working it a few different ways but keep winding up with: \cos \theta + i \sin \theta = i I've flown through all of the other problems on this stupid homework, but I've been working on this problem for about two...- ezperkins

Using Euler's Formula to Evaluate Complex Numbers in Rectangular Form
"Use Euler's formula to evaluate the following and write your answer in rectangular form." A. (2i)5 B. (1+i)-.5 I referred to my precal book and various websites and am still clueless. I started to work out A. but I'm not sure of anything. Here's what I did: (2i)5 = 32i On the...- ezperkins

Life of a Theoretical Physicist?
I am a junior in high school in AP Physics. Although not in the curriculum, I have been reading about theoretical quantum mechanics, string theory, et cetera for the past few months and I am extremely intrigued. If I do end up furthering my "physics career," where might it take me? There...- ezperkins

Is E&M Right for Me? Considering AP Physics C E&M as a Junior in High School
I talked to my physics teacher. He told me that after AP exams this year, he'll let me borrow a calculus book of his and that he would help me. I'm trying to get into a good summer program (Harvard, Yale, Chicago, etc.) to perhaps take calculus. I'm not really in much of a rush, I just really...- ezperkins

Is E&M Right for Me? Considering AP Physics C E&M as a Junior in High School
Both of the people who are in E&M this year are in the top 5 of the senior class (out of 650ish). One got accepted to MIT and one got wait-listed, they are both really smart. One took Calculus BC as a junior and is doing pretty well. One is in BC this year and is struggling. My school has...- ezperkins

Conservation of angular momentum / finding change in rotational kinetic energy
so K_i = \frac{3}{4}mr^2\omega_0^2 ? and K_f = \frac{9}{50}mr^2\omega_0^2 thus \Delta K = \frac{57}{100}mr^2\omega_0^2} I feel like such an idiot. . .- ezperkins
